Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Specialty: Registered Nurse
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Mixed acuity unit with PCU and MS patients (21 James MS/Tele)
  • 12-hour day/night rotating shifts; schedule may include days, nights, or a combination based on department needs
  • Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks; changes not guaranteed and depend on staffing priorities
  • No set schedule, weekend, or block schedule; facility determines full schedule (may require working every weekend)
  • Self-schedule requests allowed but final schedule balanced by facility
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift
    • Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with preceptor
  • Required to float within units of equivalent or lower acuity level

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years RN experience required
  • Oncology experience preferred but not required
  • EPIC experience required
  • Skills: IV starts, telemetry, tracheostomy management
  • Patient ratio: 1:5
  • Prior travel experience preferred (not required)

Certifications & Competencies

  • BCLS (Basic Life Support) required
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit (PALS, NRP, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification)
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required prior to start
  • Unit-specific competency exams required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (with remediation process if needed)

Licensure & Background Requirements

  • Valid RN license required (license verification within 30 days of start)
  • Residency declaration form required if using a compact license from outside Ohio
  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific fingerprinting code required)
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
  • Education accreditation verification required (accredited nursing program)
  • Employment application and skills checklist required
  • 2 professional references required (at least 1 from a manager or formal leadership)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required annually
  • Immunizations required:
    • Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
    • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemption requires documentation)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (new travelers cannot start with pending drug screen)
  • COVID vaccination not required but strongly recommended

Additional Notes

  • Must be flexible with scheduling and floating between units
  • Orientation includes both classroom and on-unit precepted training
  • Facility policies on dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, compliance, and fraud/waste/abuse training must be reviewed and acknowledged annually
  • Fingerprinting and background check processes are time-sensitive and must be completed prior to or at start as specified

This position is ideal for RNs with at least 2 years of experience who are comfortable with flexible scheduling and working in a mixed acuity oncology-related setting. Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
