Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Specialty: Registered Nurse – Cardiovascular Medical-Surgical/Telemetry (3 West)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Nights, 7pm-7am
  • Schedule Options: 3x12 or 4x12 shifts
  • Work Days: Weekdays, every other weekend required
  • Patient Ratio: 1:7 (Team Nursing Approach)
  • Unit Description:
    • 38 beds focused on medical patients with emphasis on cardiovascular disease
    • Team includes 1 RN, 1 LPN, and 1 Nursing Assistant per 7-8 patients
    • Registered nurses act as patient advocates collaborating with health team members
    • Supportive environment for learning, education, certification, and career growth

Experience & Requirements

  • Years of Experience Required: Minimum 2 years in specialty
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted if experience requirements are met
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (AHA only)
    • ACLS (AHA only)
  • Skills Required:
    • Telemetry
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Licensing:
    • West Virginia RN License or Compact RN License (pending license submissions accepted)
  • Call: No call requirement
  • Floating: May be floated to other units as needed
  • Holiday Requests: Limit requests to no more than 1 of the 3 major holidays
  • Guaranteed Hours: Option for 36 or 48 hours per week (to be discussed during interview)

Orientation & Scheduling

  • Orientation held every other Thursday
  • Blocked schedule requests considered (discuss during interview)
  • 100-mile radius rule applies for travel distance (75-99 miles requires facility approval)

  • Short Term Acute Care hospital
  • Level IV Trauma Center
  • Major teaching hospital
  • Charting systems: Cerner, SBAR, Accudose
  • Scrub color: Royal Blue/White for RNs
  • Free parking for travelers

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License required
  • Social Security Card required (legible)
  • Background check: 7-year criminal history within 30 days of start
  • Various federal and state background screenings required (e.g., EPLS, OIG, Sex Offender Search)
  • Primary source license verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification within 30 days of start
  • Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates (EKG, medication calculation, blood administration)
  • Annual competencies and color blindness testing required
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate healthcare provider
  • Annual fit mask testing required (N95 1860 Small or Regular, Aura 9205) with accommodations available
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless medically or religiously exempted
    • COVID-19 vaccine NOT required (proof or declination accepted)
    • Tdap vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions accepted)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccinations or positive titers required
    • Hepatitis B vaccination or declination with documentation required
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titers required
  • References: Minimum 1 reference from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within 1 year of start

Additional Notes

  • No flu shot refusal without medical proof allowed during flu season
  • Returning permanent employees cannot work as travelers at this facility for 2 years after last permanent day worked
  • Various facility-specific documents and policies must be reviewed, signed, and returned prior to start (e.g., dress code, blood administration policy, math calculation packet, EKG review, time and attendance, medical release, vaccination exemption forms)
  • Orientation is two days (Thursday and Friday) and includes Cerner Infusion Management training
  • Candidates must complete required inservice training modules prior to start (approx. 4 hours)

This position offers a structured, supportive environment with a focus on cardiovascular care and professional development, suitable for RNs with at least 2 years of experience in telemetry or cardiovascular nursing.
