Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN)
Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 8 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Labor and Delivery RN to provide comprehensive care in a community hospital setting with a Level I Nursery and LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) model. The RN will manage antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum patients, including full couplet care and neonatal care in the delivery room.
Required Experience
- Minimum 3 years of RN experience in Labor and Delivery (higher value taken)
- Community hospital experience preferred
- First-time travelers not accepted
- Prior travel experience not explicitly required
Work Schedule
- Weekend rotation: 4-6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday) plus 2 Fridays per 6-week schedule
- Holiday shifts: 1 major holiday (Thanksgiving or Christmas) and 1-2 minor holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day)
- On-call: 2 mandatory on-call shifts per 6-week schedule
- Floating: RN expected to float within scope to cover triage, c-section cases (including circulating), antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care
- Block scheduling: Not accommodated
- Locals: Not accepted (home must be at least 75 miles from facility)
- Pending license: Not accepted
Patient Ratios
- 1:1 to 1:3 patient ratio
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) certification required
- ACLS, PALS, TNCC, CPI, MAB, and other certifications may be required or preferred depending on unit specifics
Required Skills and Responsibilities
- IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Administration of blood & blood products, venous blood draws, peripheral IV start and maintenance, infusion pump use
- Labor and Delivery Management: Amnioinfusion, assist vaginal delivery, circulate for C-section, forceps/vacuum extraction, hemorrhage/shock management, recovery post C-section, sterile vaginal exams
- Medication Administration: Antihypertensives, magnesium sulfate, Pitocin, prostaglandins, terbutaline
- Neonatal Care: Cord blood collection, infant ID/security banding, circumcision assistance and care, car seat education, metabolic screening, newborn assessment, hypoglycemia management, phototherapy, thermoregulation
- Antepartum Care: NSTs (Non-Stress Tests), reflex and edema assessments, triage of obstetrical patients, use of external fetal heart monitoring
- Postpartum Care: Baby-friendly protocols, breastfeeding/lactation support, episiotomy/incisional care, Foley catheter insertion, fundus/lochia/perineum care, breast pump use, wound assessment, care of postpartum complications (hemorrhage, bladder distension, pregnancy-induced hypertension, multiple births)
- Surgical Procedures: D&C, tubal ligation, post-op gynecology care including hysterectomy
- Pain Management: Epidural anesthesia, general anesthesia, opioids, PCA use, pain assessment and management
- Fetal Monitoring: Recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns, spiral electrode placement, internal fetal monitoring, intrauterine pressure catheter placement and calibration
- Additional Skills: Isolation precautions/PPE, vaccine administration, external cephalic version, emergency response including infant/neonatal arrest and rapid response team participation

- Acute care hospital with 74 staffed beds
- Charting system: Epic
- Scrub color: Navy (provided)

Compliance and Background Requirements
- Government-issued ID required
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
- Education verification required (highest nursing education)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required quarterly
- Fingerprinting required for Illinois long-term care or rehab units (not for this Missouri assignment)
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include comprehensive drug panel
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask (N95) testing required annually
- Immunizations and titers required: Tdap, TB screening, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (with boosters or declinations as applicable)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Various facility-specific documents and acknowledgments (HIPAA, confidentiality, latex allergy, hand hygiene, dress code, etc.) must be completed prior to start
- Competency exams and skills checklists required, including medication/pharmacology competency and unit-specific skills
- References: Two professional references required, preferably supervisors within the last year
Additional Notes
- RN must be able to provide full couplet care and float as needed within the LDRP unit
- Must be willing to work holiday and weekend shifts as scheduled
- No block scheduling or local hires accepted
- Must have all required licenses and certifications active and verifiable prior to start
