Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Unit (Contract)

Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to a designated group of patients on a Medical Surgical Unit. Deliver care based on nursing theory, research, evidence-based practice, and organizational standards. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

• Deliver patient care using critical thinking and nursing process.
• Assess and evaluate patient needs; integrate assessment and intervention skills.
• Collaborate with healthcare team on care planning and evaluation.
• Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
• Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
• Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
• Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

• Facilitate patient-centered care practices such as bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, medication review, and discharge planning.
• Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
• Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
• Use evidence-based practices to improve patient perceptions of care.
• Address patient and family concerns and escalate as appropriate.
• Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

• Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify barriers to improvement.
• Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety.
• Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
• Follow institutional protocols to identify and avoid high-risk behaviors.
• Document nursing practice accurately to support quality initiatives.

Operations

• Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
• Coordinate supply and inventory management for patient care.
• Escalate resource deficits appropriately.
• Promote cost-effective patient care approaches.
• Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
• Maintain thorough and compliant documentation.

• Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
• Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, including experience within the last year
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
• For Travel positions: Minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience (not required for Per Diem positions)

Unit Information

• Average census: 30 patients
• Unit size: 34 beds
• Staffing ratio: 1 nurse to 5 patients
• Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours, with every other weekend and holiday required

Contract Length

Approximately 13 weeks (89 days)
