Job Description
- Provide comprehensive nursing care including executing Licensed Independent Provider’s orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in patient examinations and treatments.
- Apply nursing and supervisory techniques in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents.
- Perform all technical and clinical procedures within scope of education and licensure.
- Attend sick calls with the physician, prepare inmates/residents for examination, and manage medication distribution and documentation.
- Call Licensed Independent Providers for medication, treatment orders, and emergencies.
- Examine and assess new or ill/injured inmates/residents; refer to emergency room or other healthcare facilities as needed.
- Perform emergency procedures and notify providers for treatment orders.
- Coordinate professional medical services provided by contract personnel.
Additional Responsibilities
- Monitor inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate.
- Supervise and guide licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
- Maintain good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies.
- Use corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures while exercising independent judgment.
- Evaluate medical service provision to prevent inappropriate use or duplication.
- Maintain security and confidentiality of all medical records.
- Assist with medical file reviews to ensure documentation of services.
- Monitor potential catastrophic illnesses closely.
- Audit pharmacy use for formulary adherence and comply with pharmacy laws, especially controlled substances.
- Observe and record inmate/resident behavior.
- Inspect medical unit for contraband and securely store or dispose of supplies and equipment.
- Provide health counseling and education individually or in groups.
- Assist in preparing and maintaining various medical and operational records and reports.
- Interpret medical, technical, governmental, legal, and non-legal documents.
- Respond to lawsuits and attend court hearings as necessary.
- Evaluate and recommend physical safety requirements for a safe working environment.
- Facilitate accreditation processes (NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO) by providing efficient and appropriate medical services.
- Prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports; take action in serious incidents and emergencies.
- Escort or coordinate movement of inmates/residents for medical treatment.
- Perform searches for contraband on people and objects.
- Work rotating shifts and perform security checks in confined areas.
- Take action to prevent or diffuse disruptive situations.
- Perform rescue functions during accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including basic emergency medical aid and evacuation.
Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited college, university, or nursing program with a degree/diploma in nursing.
- Current nursing licensure in the state of employment (Oklahoma).
- One year of professional nursing experience preferred.
- Valid driver's license required.
