Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week
Unit Overview
- 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Patient types: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) are used house-wide; nurses do not read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare) – RNs troubleshoot only
- Charge nurse and house supervisor present 24/7; charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments unless staffing is short
- Nurse aides/patient care tech ratios:
- Day/evening: 1:9-10
- Night: 1:10-12
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has started
- BLS (AHA) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Must have level 1 trauma experience
- Must have prior travel nursing experience (no first-time travelers)
- Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Experience with heparin titrated drips based on PTT required (RNs are required to titrate drips)
- Must produce a negative drug screen (drug-free campus policy)
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- 12-hour night shifts
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: Participates in float rotation with general unit staff; if floated outside general unit, only assigned tasks within competency and with trained nurse support
- Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation including computer training and precepted patient care
- Dress code: No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Orientation hours (12 hours) are non-billable
- Call-off policy allows 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation
This position is ideal for experienced neuro med-surg RNs with trauma and travel nursing backgrounds seeking a night shift role in a neuroscience-focused acute care setting.
