Registered Nurse – Med Surg ICU

Location: Galesburg, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours

Unit Details

• Department: Medical-Surgical ICU
• Unit Size: 6 private rooms
• Patient-to-Nurse Ratio: 2 patients per RN
• Average Daily Census: 6 patients
• Nurse Aides: Not available
• Floating: May float to intermediate care with a 1:4 or 1:5 nurse-to-patient ratio
• Orientation: 2 shifts of floor-specific orientation
• EMR System: EPIC
• Telemetry: Managed by telemetry tech; RN manages vasopressors, paralytics, bicarbonate, insulin drips
• Ventilator Support: Includes vents, BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC
• Hospital Coverage: Hospitalist onsite 12 hours; e-ICU hospitalist coverage 7 PM – 7 AM with camera/audio monitoring
• Respiratory Therapist: Available 24/7
• Pharmacy: 24/7 coverage onsite or via e-pharmacist with on-call pharmacist for medication mixing
• Charge Nurse: Charge RN role approximately 50% of the time
• Scrub Color: No specific color required

Patient Population / Common Diagnoses

• Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP)
• Sepsis
• Post-surgical bowel resection
• Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA)
• Hernia repair
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
• Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)

Schedule & Time Off

• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend currently; changing to every third weekend starting July 24
• Call Requirement: None
• Holidays: Work if holiday falls on scheduled weekend
• Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or shift payment required
• Orientation Hours: 12 non-billable hours

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Active Illinois RN license or proof of application initiation
• BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA certified
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – AHA certified

Required Candidate Conditions

• Must comply with a drug-free workplace policy and produce a negative drug screen for all panels
• Submission requires last 4 digits of SSN, middle initial, and requested time off

Clinical Skills & Experience

• General ICU background strongly preferred
• Experience with titration of vasopressors, ventilator care, and insulin drips
• Ability to interpret EKGs

• No specific scrub color required
• Local rate adjustments apply for clinicians living within 50 miles (not included here)

This position is ideal for experienced Med Surg ICU RNs comfortable with critical care skills, night shifts, and working in a small ICU setting with a focus on telemetry and ventilator management.
