Med Surg RN - 4th Floor (Med Surg - 6090)

Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Med Surg (Cost center 6090)
  • Beds: 52 private rooms
  • Shift: 12-hour shifts (06:45-19:15; 18:45-07:15)
  • Schedule: Made out for 6 weeks at a time; staff can submit up to 6 requests off per schedule
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (3 weekends out of a 6-week schedule)
  • Holidays: Work into holiday rotation schedule
  • Floating: May float to other Med Surg units, Med Surg/Oncology, or IMC (Med Surg overflow, no drips)
  • Orientation: General hospital orientation plus 2 full shifts on the unit

Patient Population & Care

  • Post-op ortho, neuro (laminectomies, discectomies, spinal fusions), gallbladders, mastectomies, sleeve gastrectomies, infections, COPD, cerebral palsy, pneumonia, cellulitis, etc.
  • Hemodialysis patients on unit; experience with peritoneal dialysis highly preferred
  • COVID testing patients may remain on unit or transfer to COVID unit depending on test timing

Staffing & Ratios

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6-7 (mostly 1:7 for day and night shifts)
  • Charge Nurse takes full patient assignment, supported by a Clinical Assistant (CA) 40 hours/week
  • CNA ratio: 1:10-12, usually 4-6 CNAs per shift

Certifications & Experience Requirements

  • Required: BLS (AHA), NIHSS
  • Preferred: ACLS (a plus)
  • Specialty Experience: Not explicitly stated; assume minimum 2 years Med Surg experience based on typical requirements for this level of care
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not specified or required

Clinical Skills & Equipment

  • IVs: IV team starts all IVs; RNs assess IV sites but do not start IVs
  • Drips: Heparin, rare Lasix (not continuous), PCAs with MSO4, possible Ativan gtt; no cardiac or insulin drips
  • Ventilation: Bipap (intermittent), CPAP, High Flow oxygen
  • Telemetry: Remote tele monitored on a different unit; RNs not required to read strips but may if experienced
  • Support Services:
    • Hospitalist in-house 24/7
    • Intensivist in ICU 24/7
    • Respiratory Therapy 24/7
    • Pharmacy 24/7 (Pyxis system)

Dress Code

  • RNs: Navy blue top & bottom, navy scrub jackets, no hoodies
  • CNAs: Grey scrubs

Additional Notes

  • Must be willing to float to COVID unit if needed
  • 50-mile radius rule for candidate submissions
  • Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission

This position is ideal for Med Surg RNs with solid clinical skills, flexibility to float, and experience or willingness to work with dialysis and post-op patients in a fast-paced hospital setting.
