Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) RN - Boise, Idaho

Job Overview

  • Location: Boise, Idaho
  • Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Floor 4
  • Assignment Length: 13 weeks (travel assignment)
  • Bed Count: 12 beds (summer census ~4, winter ~6)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2

Required Certifications & Experience

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Minimum 2 years of PICU nursing experience required
  • Must have experience with EVD (External Ventricular Drain) and trach/vent care
  • Preferred experience with Epic electronic health records and Alaris infusion pumps

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Patients with tracheostomies and ventilators
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Surgical patients (trachs, G-tubes, shunts, hernia repairs, seizures)
  • No cardiac patients

Clinical Responsibilities

  • RNs are required to titrate drips (e.g., propofol, fentanyl, epinephrine)
  • RNs troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment including ventilators, bubble CPAP, and BiPAP
  • RNs read and interpret telemetry/monitor strips themselves
  • Charge nurse present on each shift but does not take patient assignments
  • No nurse aides or patient care technicians on the unit

Staffing & Scheduling

  • Shifts: 7am-7pm (day) and 7pm-7am (night)
  • Scheduling flexibility with up to 5 shifts in a block schedule if it meets unit needs
  • Weekend requirement: 5 shifts in 6 weeks
  • Holiday requirement: At least 1 holiday shift during the contract
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Frequent floating within pediatrics, including NICU and mandatory patient sitter assignments

Orientation & Dress Code

  • Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts (12 hours each)
  • Scrub color/dress code: Any color allowed

Additional Notes

  • Pediatrician coverage: In-house during the day; may take call from home at night
  • Facility enforces a 50-mile radius rule for candidates’ permanent address verification

This position is ideal for experienced PICU nurses comfortable with ventilator care, drip titration, and working in a pediatric critical care environment with a moderate census and a 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio.
