Unit Information
- Unit: Blood Cancer Unit / Oncology
- Beds: 18
- Staff: 37 total
- Shift Staffing:
- Day Shift: 1 charge nurse (no patient assignment), 3-5 RNs, 1 CNA
- Night Shift: 1 charge nurse (no patient assignment), 3-5 RNs
- Patient Ratios: 3-4 patients per nurse
- Equipment: Telemetry, bladder scanner, Alaris pump and Alaris PCA
- EMR System: Meditech
Required Qualifications
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN) in Oncology
- Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years in specialty
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- Chemotherapy Certification (required to administer chemo/biotherapy)
- Licenses: Valid Registered Nurse License
Skills & Experience
- Compassionate care for oncology and chronic patient populations
- Quick learner
- Preferred:
- Chemo and biotherapy certification
- Step-down experience (familiarity with standing orders such as fluid bolus, first fever)
- Experience with very acute hematology patients
Typical Procedures Performed
- Lumbar puncture
- Bone marrow biopsies (with conscious sedation or no sedation)
- Thoracentesis

- Nurses handle many medications, blood, and electrolyte replacements.
- Nurses without chemo certification will not administer chemo/biotherapy but will be around hazardous drugs; education is provided for safe handling.
