ICU Charge Nurse - Float Pool
Location: Centennial, Colorado (Zone 3 - 60 mile radius float zone)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced ICU Charge Nurse to float within a multi-ICU float pool covering various ICU types including MICU, SICU, TICU, CVICU, etc. The role requires flexibility to float across a 60-mile radius zone and potentially to sister facilities within the region.
Requirements
- Experience:
- Minimum 2 years ICU experience
- Prior Charge Nurse experience required
- If a first-time traveler: 3+ years ICU experience and Epic electronic health record experience preferred
- Certifications:
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS (AHA)
- NIHSS
- TNCC
- Skills:
- Comfortable titrating all critical drips including pressors, sedation, paralytics, antiarrhythmics, heparin, insulin, and more
- Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips independently (no telemetry tech support)
- Assist with respiratory troubleshooting and management (ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow oxygen, breathing treatments)
- Prior Travel Experience:
- Preferred but not strictly required; if no prior travel experience, higher ICU experience and Epic skills are needed
Unit Details
- Patient Ratios:
- 1:1 to 1:2 depending on acuity
- May flex up to 1:3
- 1:1 for high acuity patients (e.g., CRRT, IABP, Impella)
- Charge Nurse Role:
- Designated charge nurse on each unit
- Typically does not take patient assignments unless necessary (more common on night shifts)
- Support Staff:
- No nurse aides except for sitter needs
- Respiratory Therapist designated for ICU but may not be on unit 24/7
- Common Patient Types:
- General ICU patients across multiple ICU specialties
- Charge nurse may respond to codes and rapid responses hospital-wide
Scheduling & Orientation
- Shift: 7am - 7pm
- Schedule: Created by leadership for 6 weeks at a time
- Weekend Requirement: 6-9 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
- Holiday Requirement: May be asked to participate in holiday rotation
- Call/Standby: Rare, only for low census situations
- Orientation: 1-2 days with a preceptor, must be in-state for orientation week (remote completion of modules possible)
- Floating:
- Required to float within Zone 3 (including multiple ICU types and stepdown/PCU/med-surg telemetry units)
- May float to sister facilities within the Denver region
- Dress Code: Any color scrubs
Additional Notes
- Candidates are responsible for securing housing that allows floating throughout the entire 60-mile zone.
- All time off requests must be submitted prior to starting the assignment.
- Travelers are expected to be flexible and assist in filling scheduling gaps.
