Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Department: Neuro ICU
- Unit Size: 18 beds
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2
- Shift Length: 12 hours
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Rotating every other holiday
- Orientation: 20 hours (one 8-hour shift and one 12-hour shift)
- Floating: Travelers float first; may float to intermediate (1:3 ratio) or general floors (1:4 ratio)
Patient Population & Care
- Common Diagnoses: Ventriculostomy patients, strokes (with/without tPA), post-craniectomy care
- Typical Procedures/Skills: Ventriculostomy, NIH Stroke Scale Certification, ventilator management, arterial and central lines, acute stroke management, tPA administration
- Drip Management: RNs are required to titrate drips as ordered by physicians; variety of drips used
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse: Present; may take patient assignments if staffing is limited
- House Supervisor: Available 24/7
- Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs: Yes, with a 9:1 ratio
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: RNs troubleshoot vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow devices
- Tele/Monitor Techs: Present on every shift; nurses read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)
Required Certifications & Licensure
- Active Illinois RN license or proof of application initiation required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
Experience & Skills
- Specialty Experience: Neuro ICU nursing with skills in stroke management, ventilator care, and line management
- Must be comfortable with high-acuity neuro patients and complex critical care interventions
- Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required
Additional Notes
- Drug-Free Workplace: Negative drug screen required
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (do not count toward guaranteed hours)
- Call or standby: Not applicable
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs comfortable with critical care nursing, complex neurological patients, and working in a fast-paced ICU environment.
