Registered Nurse (Neuro Med-Surg Acute) - Illinois
Location
- Peoria, Illinois
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit with 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Common patient diagnoses: stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Nurse aides/patient care tech ratios:
- Day & evening: 1:9-10
- Night: 1:10-12
- Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) are house-wide; nurses do not read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
Schedule
- 12-hour night shifts
- Approximately 36 hours per week
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday requirement: every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: participates in float rotation; when floated outside general unit, only assigned tasks within competency and with trained nurse support
Orientation
- 2 days unit-specific orientation including computer training and precepted patient care
- 12 non-billable orientation hours
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Heparin drip titration experience (based on PTT) required
- Prior travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Previous experience working on a dedicated neuro unit required
- RNs are required to titrate drips
Licensing & Compliance
- Active Illinois RN license or proof of application in process required
- Must comply with drug-free workplace policy and produce a negative drug screen for all panels
Additional Notes
- Charge nurse present 24/7; generally does not take patient assignments unless staffing is short
- House supervisor available 24/7
- No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed on duty
