Registered Nurse – Med Surg/Telemetry

Location: Denison, Iowa
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week (typically 7am-7pm Friday, Saturday, Sunday)

Job Description

• Work in a 19-21 bed Critical Access Med-Surg/Telemetry unit with an average census of 8-10 patients.
• Patient population includes telemetry patients, post-surgical, respiratory conditions, orthopedic (hip, knee), wound care, occasional pediatrics (1-2 times per week), gunshot or urology cases, and skilled services.
• Common medications managed include Cardizem, insulin, and heparin drips (Cardizem drips are infrequent).
• Must be able to read telemetry strips (Mindray monitors) and recognize basic cardiac rhythms.
• BiPAP setup and use required, though respiratory therapists and paramedics assist with BiPAP management.
• Floating: May float to similar units; OB nurses float to Med-Surg/Telemetry but not vice versa.
• Staffing ratios typically 1:5, rarely 1:6, with 3 nurses scheduled per shift.
• Orientation usually consists of two shifts with a preceptor on the unit.
• Scheduling: Self-scheduling with possible block schedules; schedules made about 2 weeks in advance, sometimes up to 6 weeks.
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
• Scrubs: Any professional color accepted.
• Local clinicians within 50 miles will not be accepted.

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Iowa.
• Minimum 2 years of experience in Med Surg/Telemetry specialty.
• Current certifications: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), PALS (AHA).
• Ability to manage telemetry monitoring and titratable drips.
• Cerner experience preferred but training available for the right candidate.
• Critical Access Hospital (CAH) experience highly preferred.
