Registered Nurse – Medical-Surgical

Location: Newburgh, Indiana

Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour Days (6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)

Job Description

• Work on a Medical-Surgical unit with a patient population including medical and surgical cases such as confusion/behavioral health/CIWA, CHF, COPD, UTI, cellulitis, sepsis, amputations, decubitus ulcers, and general surgeries.
• Unit size: 32 beds (increasing to 37 in January 2025).
• Float requirement: First to float within skillset to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice for cross-campus float; mid-shift float within the same campus is common.
• Weekend/Holiday requirement: Work three weekends every six weeks and every other holiday.
• No on-call or call-back required.
• May be required to precept students and new hires in this teaching hospital environment.
• Scrub color: Navy blue; no competing health system or agency logos allowed.
• Attendance policy: More than 3 call-ins may result in termination.
• COVID-19 vaccine is not currently required (subject to change).

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of strong Medical-Surgical nursing experience.
• At least 1 prior travel assignment completed.
• Experience in a trauma level II setting.
• Current active compact Registered Nurse license.
• Current AHA BLS certification.
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
• Recent experience with EPIC electronic health record system (checkoff class required).

Skills & Competencies

• Proficient in IV fluid and antibiotic therapies.
• Strong medical and post-surgical patient assessment skills.
• Experience with heparin drips.
• Wound care including wound vacs.
• Basic telemetry skills.
• Ability to manage a diverse patient population with complex needs.
• Resilient, adaptable to change, and a strong team player.

Additional Information

• Guaranteed minimum 36 hours per week (48 hours accepted upon request).
• Overtime applies after 52 hours on 48-hour contracts.
• Orientation includes a weekly session in July.
• Local candidates within a 40-mile radius are not eligible.
• Guaranteed hours may vary during holidays when the unit is closed.
