Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Opportunity

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Facility Type: Short Term Acute Care, Magnet & Teaching Hospital, Level I Trauma Center
Unit: South Campus PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit)


Job Details

  • Schedule: 4x10 hour shifts, 2200-0830 (night shift), rotating start times as needed
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Average Daily Census: 70-90 patients
  • Unit Size: 38 patient bays
  • Patient Population: Adults, occasional adolescents, geriatric patients
  • Surgical Recovery Types: Neurosurgery, ENT, plastics, orthopedics, thoracic, vascular, trauma, general, colorectal, GYN, urological, electrophysiology, interventional radiology, transplant (excluding open heart surgeries and liver transplants)
  • Unit Operation: 24/7 with dedicated PCT/transport team
  • Floating: Floating within scope to meet facility needs is required
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted (home address must be at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Return to Office Restrictions: No more than 7 days
  • Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks (cancelled shifts must be regular shift length)
  • Weekend/Call/Holiday: No weekends, no call, no holidays required

Experience & Skills Required

  • Minimum 2-3 years Level 1 ICU experience required (Level 2 ICU experience considered)
  • Critical care experience in inpatient setting at a Level I Trauma Center
  • Skills:
    • Phase I PACU
    • Dysrhythmia recognition/management
    • Blood product administration
    • Phlebotomy
    • Starting IVs and IV vasopressors
    • ICP monitoring
    • Care of ventilated patients
    • General critical care skills
  • Night shift candidates must learn preoperative patient workup

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, CPI, NIH Stroke Certification) - check unit-specific requirements
  • State License (Missouri) with Primary Source Verification (NURSYS)
  • IV Certification (for LPN/LVN if applicable)
  • Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam (as applicable)
  • Unit-specific competency exams including Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (updated annually)

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Government issued ID required (Driver’s License/State ID)
  • Criminal Background Check within 6 months (7-year search including statewide, nationwide, sex offender, international if applicable)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks (quarterly)
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree (cannot pend at start)
  • Fingerprinting required for Illinois long-term care or rehab float assignments (not required for BJC IL Home Care)
  • State-specific searches for Missouri and Illinois (EDL, Highway Patrol, Family Care Safety Registry, Exclusion Lists)
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include specific panels and be valid throughout assignment
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually
  • Immunizations and health documentation:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination (expires every 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray (with yearly TB questionnaire)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • HIPAA Acknowledgement, Latex Allergy Questionnaire, Confidentiality Form, Hand Hygiene Policy, Fingernail Policy, Dress Code Policy must be reviewed and signed prior to start
  • Facility-specific documents including badge photo and regulatory compliance education must be completed

  • References: Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
  • Employment application and unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start
  • Performance evaluations may be requested but are not required for extensions or per diem
  • Candidates must adhere to all facility policies or risk removal from shifts
