Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical/Oncology)

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Overview

• Unit: 5S Medical Surgical/Oncology (29 Bed Unit)
• Patient Population: Adult medical and surgical patients, oncology, palliative care, family education, urology, telemetry
• Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, 11a-11p; weekdays, every other weekend, float within scope
• Patient Ratios: 4-5:1 (days), 5-6:1 (nights)
• Contract Options: 36 or 48 hours guaranteed
• Schedule: Every other weekend required; holiday RTO limited to 1 of 3 major holidays
• Facility Type: Level IV Trauma Center, major teaching hospital

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in West Virginia
• Minimum 2 years of experience in Medical Surgical/Telemetry, with experience within the last year
• BLS issued by American Heart Association
• ONCC or ONS certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Experience working with adult patients in an acute care setting
• Skills:

  • Telemetry
  • Central line draws
  • Ports
  • Blood administration
  • PCA pumps
  • Bone marrow aspiration assist
  • Pleurx chest tubes

Additional Requirements

• Valid Driver’s License required
• Social Security Card required (or proof of request)
• Background Check: 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start
• Drug Screen: Within 30 days of start, includes multiple substances, no placeholders allowed
• Physical Exam: Within 1 year of start, must state candidate is in good health and able to perform duties
• Fit Mask Testing: Annual fit testing required (N95 3M models accepted); PAPR accommodations available if needed
• Immunizations & Health:

  • Tdap vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions accepted with approval)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers required
  • Hepatitis B vaccination or titer documentation required
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titers required
  • Seasonal Flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless approved exemption
  • COVID-19 vaccination NOT required (proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted)

Orientation & Training

• Orientation: 2 days (Thursday and Friday), includes Cerner Infusion Management
• Pass/Fail Testing: Required for nursing candidates (EKG exam, medication calculation, blood administration)
• Annual Skills Checklist: Must be completed for specialty, including MS/Telemetry skills for Clinical Decisions unit
• Inservice Training: Must be completed 1 week prior to start (approx. 4 hours), includes specialty-specific modules
• Dress Code Policy: Must be reviewed, initialed, and returned
• Other Facility Documents: Blood administration policy, math calculation packet, EKG review packet to be reviewed prior to start

Work Environment

• Charting System: Cerner
• Scrub Color: Royal Blue/White for RNs
• Parking: Free for travelers
• Float: Clinicians may be floated within scope to meet facility needs
• Radius Rule: 100-mile radius; 75-99 miles requires facility approval

References & Documentation

• References: Minimum 1 reference from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within 1 year of start
• Documentation: Candidate profile, specialty skills checklist, RN license verification (NURSYS), driver’s license, social security card

Notes

• Facility will consider strong candidates without oncology experience
• Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked at this system
• Flu shot refusal without medical proof is not accepted during flu season
• Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this role
