Job Opportunity: Nursery Registered Nurse (RN)

Location: Orangeburg, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Nursery RN
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12-hour night shifts (7 PM - 7 AM)
  • Patient Ratio: 1:6
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: No call required currently, but may change based on unit needs
  • Floating: May need to float within the women's area of the facility if needed

Experience & Licensure Requirements

  • Years of Experience Required: 2 years (highest requirement)
  • First-time Travelers: Not accepted
  • License: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license, must be in hand prior to start
  • Charge Nurse Experience: Required
  • Level 1 & 2 Nursery Experience: Required (including phototherapy, antibiotics, opioid withdrawal, bubble CPAP)
  • Comfort Level: Must be comfortable managing patients from delivery to discharge

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): Required (AHA certification preferred)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): Required (AHA/AAP only)
  • STABLE: Highly preferred but not required
  • Additional Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – as applicable
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – as applicable
    • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) – AWHONN or NCC accepted
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – as applicable

Special Requirements

  • Experience in Level 1 & 2 nursery settings
  • Charge nurse experience
  • Ability to manage complex nursery care including phototherapy, antibiotics, opioid withdrawal, and bubble CPAP
  • Must be comfortable with delivery to discharge care

  • Total Staffed Beds: 286
  • Charting System: Epic
  • Scrub Color: Royal Blue
  • Hurricane Season: June through November; travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during this time

Scheduling & Hours

  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
  • Block Scheduling: Possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
  • Local Radius: 60 miles
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, on a case-by-case basis

Prior Travel Experience

  • Required: Yes, prior travel experience is required (first-timers not accepted)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
    • SSN Trace, Statewide, National Criminal, Sex Offender Registry, FACIS 3, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
  • Education Verification: Required (diploma/transcripts accepted as placeholder)
  • Licensure Verification: Primary source verification required; must be active and unencumbered
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • Health Documents:
    • Physical exam updated annually
    • Immunizations: Tdap, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B (titer or vaccination or declination)
    • TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days of start) or chest x-ray if positive history
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season or medical/religious exemption accepted
    • COVID vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
    • Respirator medical clearance annually (RespSafety questionnaire)
  • Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology and competency exams required as applicable
  • Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references required
  • Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers required

Orientation & Facility Specifics

  • Completion of orientation modules and facility-specific training required prior to start
  • Clear, passport-style photo required for badge
  • Facility-specific job description must be signed prior to start
  • Fit testing for masks will be done onsite during orientation
  • Travelers must upload vaccination records (COVID, flu) into facility system
