Job Opportunity: Emergency Department Registered Nurse
Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 3x12 hour nights (7 PM - 7 AM), weekdays, every other weekend required
- Patient Ratio: 4:1
- Patient Population: Infants to Geriatrics
- Unit Description: Level 1 Trauma, 24 beds
- Neurological, orthopedic, psychiatric, renal emergencies
- Special focus on trauma
- High psychiatric patient population (no separate psych area)
- Multiple high acuity patients boarding
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Valid RN license in West Virginia
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience
- Minimum 1 year of Emergency Department (ED) experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Certifications required (issued by American Heart Association unless otherwise noted):
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) – must be completed at least 1 week before start (online courses not accepted)
- Skills: IV start, Telemetry
- References: Minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references within past 2 years required
Schedule & Work Conditions
- Every other weekend required
- No on-call requirements
- Floating within scope may be required to meet facility needs
- Blocked schedules possible (discuss during interview)
Candidate Submission Requirements
- Must reside more than 100 miles from the facility to be considered (75-100 miles considered case-by-case)
- Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent date worked
- Must clearly state shift preference (any, days, or nights) in submission
- Submission packet must include:
- Candidate profile/work history
- Specialty-specific skills checklist
- RN license verification (NURSYS verification within 2 days of submission)
- Social Security card (legible)
- Minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical Exam: Within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate healthcare provider, stating candidate is in good health and able to perform job duties
- Drug Screen: Within 30 days of start, including standard panel (amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
- Vaccinations & Testing:
- COVID-19 vaccination not mandatory; proof of vaccination or signed declination required
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless approved medical/religious exemption
- Tdap vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions accepted with approval)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) and Varicella immunity required (vaccines or positive titers)
- Hepatitis B vaccination or immunity documentation required
- Fit Mask Testing: Annual fit testing required (N95 masks accepted); accommodations available if needed
- Background Checks:
- 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start
- Sex offender search, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG checks required and must be current
- Pass/Fail Testing: EKG, medication calculation, and blood administration tests required for nursing candidates
Additional Notes
- Orientation is held every other Thursday and lasts two days (Thursday and Friday)
- Orientation includes Cerner Infusion Management training
- Candidates must review and acknowledge facility policies including dress code, blood administration, math calculation packet, and EKG review prior to start
- Candidates must complete required inservice training modules approximately 1 week before start (estimated 4 hours)
- Candidates with latex allergy must notify manager to avoid exposure
- Candidates requesting vaccination exemptions must complete appropriate exemption forms and obtain approval prior to start
This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work in a high-acuity Level 1 Trauma Emergency Department with a diverse patient population. Candidates must meet all licensing, certification, and compliance requirements to be considered.
