Job Opportunity: Sterile Processing Tech (SPT)

Job Summary

Seeking a Senior Sterile Processing Tech to work primarily independently with strong critical thinking and communication skills. The role involves variable shifts, mostly covering evening and overnight hours, with on-call responsibilities and floating between main OR and Pavilion (Outpatient Surgery Center).

Required Experience

• Minimum 5 years of experience in Sterile Processing
• At least 3 years in a shift lead, precepting, or team lead role within a hospital setting
• No first-time travelers accepted (prior travel experience required)

Work Schedule

• 5 days a week, 8-hour shifts
• Variable shifts including:

  • 0500-1330
  • 0630-1500
  • 0700-1530
  • 1000-1830
  • 1330-2200
  • 1900-0330
  • 2130-0600
• On-call shifts:

  • Weekdays: 2200-0700
  • Weekends/Holidays: 0700-1900 and 0700-0700 (24-hour)
• Weekends may exceed every other weekend to meet unit needs
• Scheduling requests due to outside employment will not be considered

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution) or HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association)

Required Skills & Knowledge

• Experience with the following equipment:

  • Da Vinci Xi
  • Getinge Autoclave
  • Amsco Autoclave
  • Steris V-Pro
  • Steris System 1e
  • Getinge 86 series washer
  • Triton 72 ultrasonic cleaner
• Strong critical thinking and communication skills
• Ability to work independently
• Must be able to float between different surgical areas

Additional Requirements

• On-call required
• Float required between main OR and Pavilion
• Scrubs provided
• Local candidates within 50 miles accepted

Required Qualifications

• Valid Sterile Processing Tech license/certification as applicable
• BLS and CBSPD or HSPA certification
• Prior travel experience required (no first-time travelers)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Background check within 45 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
• Drug screening (10 panel) within 90 days of start
• Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by MD, NP, PA, or DO
• Immunizations and health documents including:

  • TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months
  • Flu vaccine or declination during flu season
  • COVID vaccine or declination
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within 10 years or declination
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer
  • Hepatitis B vaccination or signed declination
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer
• Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent) required for travel starts
• References: Minimum 2 supervisor references covering 1 year of employment in sterile processing or comparable setting
• Employment application covering at least last 5 years

Training & Competency

• Completion of required WorkRamp modules prior to start (Sterile Processing path)
• Epic training modules may be required depending on assignment
• Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable

Other Notes

• Variable availability required, mostly covering evening and overnight shifts
• On-call shifts split fairly within the department
• No scheduling accommodations for outside employment
• Must comply with float policy acknowledging possible assignment to other Providence facilities within reasonable distance

This position is ideal for experienced Sterile Processing Techs with leadership experience who are comfortable working independently in a fast-paced acute care hospital environment with variable shifts and on-call duties. Prior travel experience is mandatory.
