Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) - Travel/Contract

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Role: Operating Room Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA)
  • Unit: 30-bed Operating Room Unit for Adults
  • Schedule: 5 shifts per week, 8 hours each (06:45 AM - 5:15 PM)
  • Includes some weekday and weekend on-call duties (rotating schedule, self-scheduled)
  • No floating outside scope of practice
  • No block scheduling guarantee
  • Local candidates within 75 miles radius not accepted
  • Guaranteed 40 hours per week

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in West Virginia
  • First Assist experience with a minimum of 2 years, including experience within the last year
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience working with pediatric patients

Call and On-Call Requirements

  • Weekend and some weeknight on-call duties required
  • Self-scheduling for call shifts

Orientation and Onboarding

  • Medical Affairs Orientation required (typically 30-60 days)
  • Orientation is 2 days (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management training
  • Pass/fail testing required for EKG, medication calculation, and blood administration (Nursing only)
  • Annual fit testing required (3M N95 masks accepted; PAPR accommodations available if needed)
  • Must complete facility-specific documents including dress code, blood administration policy, math calculation review, EKG review, time and attendance, medical release, vaccination exemption forms, and state liability/time gap forms

Certifications & Testing Requirements

  • BLS (required)
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC certifications may be required depending on unit (check unit-specific requirements)
  • Pass/fail competency exams for medication/pharmacology and EKG (Nursing only)
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification required for certain units (ER, Surgical & Trauma ICU, Trauma Stepdown, Behavioral Health)
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, sex offender search, and federal exclusions (must be current within 30 days)
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (no placeholders or pending results accepted)

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year, stating good health and no limitations
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
  • Annual TB questionnaire for positive TB responders
  • Required vaccinations or proof of immunity:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (no declinations accepted; medical/religious exemptions require approval)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titers required)
    • Hepatitis B (series or positive titer required)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titers required)
    • Seasonal Flu vaccine required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) with medical/religious exemptions allowed and approval required
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required (proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted)

Additional Requirements

  • Must provide:
    • Valid Driver’s License
    • Social Security Card (or proof of request for clearance)
    • Minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references within past 2 years
    • License and certification verification (clean license required)
  • No return to travel assignment within 2 years if previously employed permanently at this facility
  • Flu vaccine refusal without medical proof is not accepted during flu season

Notes

  • Candidates must be prepared for a rotating call schedule including weekends and some weeknights
  • Prior pediatric and women's specialty experience is highly valued
  • Robotic surgery experience is a plus
  • No local candidates accepted within 75 miles radius
  • Orientation and onboarding include multiple facility-specific trainings and documentation

This position is ideal for experienced OR RNs with first assist skills looking for a travel contract in a high-acuity adult operating room setting with pediatric and women's specialty exposure.
