Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PACU

Location: Tracy, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Provide competent nursing care to patients in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) with a variety of diagnoses including cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, neurological, renal, endocrine diseases, sepsis, carcinoma, and pre- and post-operative surgical patients, including pediatric patients.


Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
  • Minimum 2 years recent clinical experience in Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and critical care in an acute care setting of similar size and complexity to the facility, with PACU experience within the last year
  • Experience in Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Current certifications:
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure (NRP)
    • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
    • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM)
    • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years experience with airway management
  • Experience with central lines and post-procedure care as obtained in a critical care/PACU environment
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
  • Ability to recognize life-threatening conditions and intervene appropriately
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (read, write, hear, and verbally)
  • Must be able to travel as required by the job
  • Valid California Driver’s License and proof of liability insurance required if using own vehicle for work purposes

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and coordinate interdisciplinary plans of patient/family care
  • Manage patient care directly or through delegation to nursing team members
  • Anticipate and recognize potential problems, notifying Charge Nurse, Physician, and other staff as needed
  • Provide individualized nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patients’ bio-physical and psychosocial needs
  • Provide leadership by managing care using infection control principles, patient rights, standards of practice, and organizational policies
  • Educate patients and provide discharge instructions using the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of nursing processes and unit-specific age criteria for patient populations

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year background check required within 6 months of start
  • Education verification (Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred)
  • Various federal and state screenings including EPLS, HHS/OIG, FACIS Level 3, Sex Offender Search, OFAC Sanctions List, and others as applicable
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and health screenings including:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 90 days of start, renewed annually
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella immunity or vaccination documentation
    • Seasonal flu vaccination during flu season (Nov-April) or signed declination
  • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 6 months of start (excluding marijuana/cannabinoids per CA law)
  • Respiratory safety clearance prior to start, renewed annually
  • References and employment history verification covering 7 years with no gaps

Additional Notes

  • Unit-specific orientation and competencies must be completed timely
  • Candidates may be required to complete additional competency exams such as medication test/pharmacology, dysrhythmia/EKG, and telemetry as applicable
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) training may be required and can be completed onsite after start
  • Candidates must review and sign various facility-specific documents prior to start, including standards of business conduct, code of conduct, vendor training, and others as applicable
  • Religious exemptions for certain requirements may be considered on a case-by-case basis with appropriate documentation

This position requires a highly skilled RN with critical care or PACU experience, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to work in a fast-paced acute care environment.
