Registered Nurse - Med Surg Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Overview

  • 12-hour day/night rotating shifts (may include days, nights, or combination based on department needs)
  • Patient population primarily includes oncology patients with:
    • Continuous cardiac monitoring related to chemotherapy
    • Soft tissue malignancies receiving diagnostics, chemotherapy, and symptom management
    • Symptom management related to disease progression or treatment
    • Management of comorbidities
  • Strong emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
  • Equipment used includes: B450 monitors, GE telemetry system, bladder scanner, Alaris pumps, Stryker beds

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience, including Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
  • Experience and competency in:
    • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
    • Arterial line management
    • Blood product administration
    • Central line and PICC line care/management
    • IV starts
    • Assistance with chest tube insertion/removal
    • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) management
    • Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
  • Experience with Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM)
  • Knowledge of National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide search, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record if applicable
  • Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
  • Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start, with specific fingerprinting code
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • TB questionnaire
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemption requires documentation)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID vaccination not required but strongly recommended

Competency Exams & Training

  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start
  • Unit-specific competency exam required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%)
  • Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgement
  • Background acknowledgement and compliance policies must be reviewed and signed annually

References & Documentation

  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership (charge RN acceptable as second reference)
  • Employment application required including education verification
  • Skills checklist required

Additional Notes

  • Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to change based on staffing needs
  • Floating to other units may be required
  • Prior travel experience preferred but not mandatory

This position is ideal for RNs with Med Surg or oncology experience who are comfortable with complex patient care involving cardiac monitoring and line management, and who have strong skills in infection prevention and patient safety.
