ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Fredericksburg, Virginia
Job Overview
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (ICU)

- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (19:00 - 07:00)
- Patient Population: Specialized SICU patients including trauma, cardiovascular surgery (TAVRs, CABGs), neurosurgery, acute ventilator needs, COVID+ with high oxygen demand, DKA, severe sepsis, unstable GI bleed, open heart recovery, multi-system organ failure, and CRRT needs.
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3 (adjusted based on skill level and acuity during float)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- On-call: Not required
- Floating: Required within scope to meet facility needs
- Travel Pairs: Allowed but schedules may differ
- Locals Accepted: Yes
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum 2 years of Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Proficient in interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Skilled in arterial line management
- Competent in blood product administration

Additional Requirements & Documentation
- Background Checks: Comprehensive lifetime background check within 1 year prior to start, including federal, state, and nationwide offender registry checks.
- Drug Testing: Required within 30 days prior to start; must include a full panel of substances.
- Health Documents:
- Physical exam within 1 year prior to start
- Fit mask (N95) certification, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray as applicable
- Immunizations or immunity documentation for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
- COVID vaccination documentation or declination
- References: Two professional references required; one must be from current year and one within last two years, from supervisors or equivalent.
- Competency Exams: Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required.
- Facility-Specific Documents: Must complete and sign code of conduct, confidentiality agreement, Epic experience screening, orientation packet, and job description forms prior to start.
- Work History Verification: Minimum two years of work history verification required.
Additional Notes
- First-time travel nurses are accepted.
- Block scheduling is not accommodated.
- Return-to-Office (RTO) restrictions are at manager’s discretion.
- Guaranteed hours are subject to billing rules.
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs comfortable with high-acuity patients in a Level II Trauma Center environment, who hold the required certifications and licensure, and are ready for a night shift travel assignment in Virginia.
