Registered Nurse – Med Surg Oncology / Telemetry Unit (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Mixed acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical Telemetry unit
- Approximately 48 beds total (24 PCU + 24 MS Telemetry)
- Patient diagnoses include a variety of solid tumors and some blood cancers
- High acuity patient population
- Pediatric patients are very rare on this unit; pediatric experience is not required
- Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
Schedule
- 12-hour shifts, rotating days and nights (Day: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM; Night: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Typically 3 shifts per week (36 hours/week)
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but may change based on staffing needs
- Weekend shifts are variable
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Minimum 1 year of telemetry experience, with telemetry experience within the last year required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience in an inpatient nursing setting
Skills & Competencies
- Competency exams required prior to start, including:
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
- Unit-specific competency exam
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required within 1 year of start)
- Chemotherapy competence is not required; optional 2-day chemo course available for professional development
Equipment & Technology Used
- GE B450 telemetry monitors
- Bladder scanner
- Alaris infusion pumps
- Continuous bladder irrigation
- Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pumps
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA) required
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed)
- Annual compliance requirements include:
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment
- Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate
- Background check monitoring (monthly for some candidates)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Immunizations and health documentation required:
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer
- Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31)
- Fit mask testing required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles (valid for entire assignment)

- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership

Pros
Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
