Job Summary
The Open Heart Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for assessing and meeting patient needs in the perioperative care of cardio-thoracic surgical patients. This role involves interdisciplinary care planning, providing and delegating care, supervising support staff, and evaluating patient responses. The RN will manage complex patients undergoing procedures such as coronary bypass and valve surgeries, including pre-, intra-, and post-operative care.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform patient assessments and reassessments based on presenting problems and needs.
- Develop and integrate patient care plans tailored to diagnosis and age-specific needs.
- Ensure patient safety through proper identification, aseptic technique, positioning, surgical counts, and equipment use.
- Execute therapeutic and supportive interventions consistent with perioperative procedures.
- Provide patient and family education to meet identified needs.
- Evaluate patient responses and progress toward outcomes.
- Document patient care accurately and timely.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care.
- Facilitate patient transitions to next levels of care.
- Supervise and support team members and serve as a role model.
- Participate in ongoing learning and professional development.
- Perform advanced cardiac life support interventions, dysrhythmia assessment, hemodynamic monitoring, and vasoactive medication administration.
- Manage care for patients with multi-system failure, acute cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, neurological injury, and renal failure.
- Coordinate with ICU, PACU, anesthesia, and perfusion teams.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Maintain clinical competency including age-specific skills and annual verifications.
- Knowledge of federal and state nursing regulations.
- Proficiency with relevant computer hardware and software.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to supervise and evaluate subordinate patient care staff.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with healthcare team and diverse patient populations.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with acute, chronic, complex, and end-of-life patients.
- Prioritize work demands and work independently.
- Lead and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license from Nebraska or an approved compact state.
- Minimum 2 years of Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) experience.
- Certification and/or instruction as required by state or federal standards for the practice area.
Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA) required.
Physical Requirements
- Medium work: exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.
Additional Notes
- Must be able to float to main Operating Room as needed.
- Candidate should live within 50 miles of the facility.
- Mask Fit Test status will be requested.
