Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (ER)
Location
- McCall, Idaho
Assignment Details
- Travel assignment length: 13 weeks
- Shift length: 12-hour shifts
- Shifts: Evening and Night (1900-0730 primarily), some mid shifts (1200-0000)
- Hours per week: Approximately 36
- Weekend rotation: Usually every other weekend
- Holiday coverage: Typically 1 holiday off during winter season; holiday rotation applies
- Scheduling: Done in 6-week increments; attempts made to group shifts together and avoid on/off patterns
- Call/standby: Rare, up to 4 times per contract, rotated with permanent staff
- Floating: Required to float to Med-Surg and assist with codes and Rapid Responses hospital-wide; no patient assignment when floating
Unit Information
- Emergency Department with 8 beds and 2 trauma bays (including 1 bariatric bay and 1 negative pressure isolation room)
- 1 triage room used when main beds are full
- 1 mental health/seclusion room
- Security present most nights and some day shifts, stationed at front desk and assists with mental health patients
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 2 RNs staffed 24/7, typically 1:4 ratio
- CNA support during summer months from 12p-12a; RNs assist with tasks as needed
- Respiratory Therapists available 24/7 for vents, ABGs, breathing treatments, and EKGs; RNs troubleshoot but RTs manage critical equipment
- X-Ray and CT located nearby; transport RN assists critical patients
- RN responsible for drawing labs from IV starts; phlebotomy handles venipuncture
- Use of Phillips telemetry monitors
Patient Population & Care
- Treats both pediatric and adult patients; must be comfortable with critical pediatric care
- Common cases: strokes, STEMIs, sepsis, trauma from recreational and winter sports accidents, and a large retired patient population
- No ICU onsite; ICU-level patients stabilized and transferred by flight or ambulance (over 2 hours away)
- Nurses responsible for cleaning rooms between patients
- Common drips include standard ER drips, pressors, and critical care drips, especially during extended holds
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of Emergency Room nursing experience
- Experience working in a similar-sized facility with fewer resources preferred
- Hands-on experience with trauma, stroke (CVA), STEMI, sepsis, and critical pediatric care required
- Epic electronic health record experience strongly preferred
- First-time travelers are acceptable if they have extensive experience in a similar setting
Orientation & Culture
- Orientation includes a general orientation day plus 1 twelve-hour shift shadowing in the ER with the RN manager
- Culture emphasizes teamwork and flexibility; staff often work as a skeleton crew on nights and must be able to assist throughout the hospital
- Dress code: Any color scrubs
- Department audits include bar code scanning, infection prevention/hand hygiene, and safety audits
This position is ideal for experienced ER nurses comfortable with a broad scope of emergency care in a smaller, resource-limited hospital setting who are team players and adaptable to floating and variable patient volumes.
