Float Pool RN - Illinois, Kankakee

Position Overview

• Role: Registered Nurse (RN) in Float Pool
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: Nights
• Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
• Units Covered: MedSurg, Med Peds, Telemetry, IMCU, Rehab, Behavioral Health (including adolescent and adult)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • MedSurg/Med Peds/Behavioral Health: 1:5-6
  • IMCU: 1:5
  • CNAs support with a 1:10 ratio; additional nursing staff added if CNA coverage is low

Required Qualifications

• Illinois RN license in hand
• ACLS and BLS certifications required; NIHSS preferred
• EPIC electronic medical record experience required
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience; prior float pool experience preferred
• Prior travel experience preferred but not mandatory
• Valid Driver’s License required for submission

Clinical and Job Details

• Patient Diagnoses: Acute surgical, orthopedic/neuro, post-surgical telemetry, CHF, chest pain, detox, hospice, pediatric respiratory illnesses, high renal population (peritoneal dialysis), rehab IVs, behavioral health
• Procedures & Skills:

  • Cath lab recovery experience for IMCU required
  • Radial catheter procedures (training provided for radial band management)
  • Chest tube management mainly in IMCU
  • Use of Bipap/CPAP primarily at night or home settings; continuous Bipap in IMCU/ICU
• Medication Titration:

  • RNs do not titrate drips except heparin per protocol
  • Common titratable meds in IMCU include amiodarone, cardizem, dobutamine, lasix, insulin (glucomander)
• Charge Nurse Role:

  • Day shift team lead does not take patients
  • Night/weekend/holiday charge nurse takes patients
• Respiratory Therapy Equipment:

  • Ventilators only in ICU; RT manages settings
  • Nurses may assist with nebulizer treatments upon request
• Telemetry:

  • Med/Tele units have remote telemetry monitored 24/7 by techs; nurses verify strips
  • ICU manages own telemetry strips

Scheduling and Work Environment

• Shift Times: 5 PM to 5:30 AM (12-hour shifts); Mental health units operate 7 AM to 7 PM
• Scheduling: Staff call in before shift to receive unit assignment (no more than 1 hour prior)
• Weekend and Holiday Coverage: Every other weekend and holiday required
• Call or Standby: Not usually required
• Orientation: Unit-specific orientation includes one 12-hour shift on a single unit
• Uniform: Caribbean blue scrub color
