Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU/Med Surg/Oncology
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (various start times including 7a-7p, 7a-3p, 3p-7p, 7p-11p, 11p-7a, 7p-7a)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Unit: 6 East – PCU, Oncology, and MedSurg
Number of Beds: 27-28
Patient Population: Adults
Job Description
- Care for patients in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Oncology, and Trauma PCU settings.
- Mixed unit with patient ratios:
- PCU: 1 RN to 4 patients
- Med/Surg: 1 RN to 5 patients (days), 1 RN to 5-6 patients (nights)
- Float to med/surg and PCU units at the same level of care.
- Common patient diagnoses include oncology and trauma.
- Common drips/medications: chemotherapy, heparin, cardizem, protonix, insulin (occasionally titrated), and cardizem.
- Use of specialty equipment such as ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, A-line, Swan, EV-1000), ICP monitoring (training provided).
- IV pumps: Alaris.
- Specialty equipment: Lyko lifts and other lift equipment available.
- Nursing assistant support and additional unit support staff (PT/OT, RN case manager, social work, educator, dietician) available.
- EMR system: EPIC.
- Scrubs: Navy Blue.
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required.
- Certifications:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- ONS/ONCC (Oncology Nursing Society/Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation) preferred but not required.
- Must pass a skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90%.
- Driver’s license required at submission.
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas.
Additional Information
- Orientation: 2 days.
- Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers are welcome.
- Patient experience focus: Hourly rounding and culturally sensitive care.
- Teamwork and positive attitude highly valued.
- Candidates must not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity.
- Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles of the facility.
Summary
This is a 13-week contract for an RN with at least 1 year of experience, preferably with oncology and PCU experience. The role involves caring for adult patients in a mixed PCU/Med Surg/Oncology unit with a focus on teamwork, patient-centered care, and adherence to certification and licensure requirements. Orientation and training are provided for specialty equipment and drips. Prior travel experience is not required.
