Job Opportunity: MedSurg Ortho/Neuro Nurse
Location: Martinsburg, West Virginia
Unit: 4 North - Ortho/Neuro (MedSurg Ortho/Neuro)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Beds: 21 total (7 private rooms, 7 semi-private rooms)
- Patient Types: Orthopedic and neurological patients including totals, spines, occipital burr holes, seizures, craniectomies, brain stimulation, traction for hips (Bucks traction), and MedSurg overflow
- Common Diagnoses: Orthopedic and neuro post-op care, seizure management, brain injury care
Certifications & Requirements
- Required: BLS (AHA), NIHSS Certification (must have NIHSS)
- Preferred: ACLS
- Licensing: Any license issues must be disclosed at time of submission
- Additional: Basic arrhythmia knowledge required; nurses do not read strips but must recognize fatal rhythms
Staffing & Ratios
- Nurse to Patient Ratio: 1:5-6 (Days usually 1:5, nights sometimes 1:5)
- Charge Nurse: 24/7 coverage; day charge nurse assists with admissions and discharges (7am-7pm), night charge nurse performs typical charge duties
- Nurse Aides: Patient Care Technicians (PCT) support the unit
- Respiratory Therapist: In-house 24/7
- Pharmacy: In-house 24/7 with Omnicell system
- IV Team: No dedicated IV team; B-Braun pumps used
Shifts & Scheduling
- Shift Length: Primarily 12-hour shifts (7:00am-7:30pm) for both day and night; 8-hour shifts may be available
- Scheduling: Use Kronos for schedule requests; requests entered by staff, approved by manager at least 2 weeks in advance for 4-week blocks; block scheduling possible, especially for nights
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend; night weekends are Friday-Sunday, day weekends are Saturday-Sunday
- Holidays: Travelers expected to work holidays as needed based on unit staffing
Orientation & Floating
- Orientation: 1 shift with a preceptor plus Net Learning Modules and EPIC training
- Floating: Nurses may float to any MedSurg unit except Emergency Department or Behavioral Health
Additional Information
- Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs or white jacket; undershirt white or navy; natural hair color required; tattoos must be covered if excessive or distasteful
- Telemetry: Yes, monitored remotely
- IV Drips: Only IV fluids like Heparin or Protonix; no titrating of drips or cardiac drips
- Ventilators: Bipap, Cpap, High Flow available
- Hospitalist: In-house 24/7
- Attendance: Very important; strong attendance expected
This position is ideal for nurses with orthopedic and neurological MedSurg experience who are comfortable with telemetry, 12-hour shifts, and working in a busy hospital setting with a variety of patient needs.
