Registered Nurse (MedSurg) – Night Shift
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- 22 private rooms
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-5
- Navy blue scrubs required
- New unit with a unified, committed team; some learning and growing expected
- Potential to float to other med/surg and telemetry units within the hospital
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Post-operative patients
- Sepsis
- Pneumonia
- COPD
- Diabetes
- Various infections
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS certification required
- Must have Level 1 Trauma experience
- Recent med/surg experience required
- Telemetry experience preferred (due to potential floating)
- Charge nurse experience preferred
- No first-time travelers accepted
- Competency in Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes required (pass/fail SIMs Lab on day 1 of orientation)
- Must maintain sterile field during procedures
- Must pass a dysphagia exam prior to acceptance (2 attempts allowed; failure results in 6-month disqualification)
- Natural hair color and no facial piercings required
- Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Travel team members must have their own vehicle
Orientation & Training
- 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation with a preceptor
- SIMs Lab includes Foley catheter insertion, central line dressing changes, lifts, restraints, and wound care education
- Pass/fail exam on day 1 of orientation
Work Schedule & Requirements
- Night shift, 12 hours per day, 36 hours per week
- 3 weekend days per pay period required (weekends are Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday shifts included based on unit coverage
- No call or standby requirements
- Schedule made 4 weeks in advance with self-scheduling
Clinical & Operational Details
- No telemetry monitors on this unit, but telemetry skills preferred for floating
- Heparin drips titrated; no cardiac drips (amiodarone, dopamine, dobutamine) titrated
- Respiratory therapists assigned to the unit; nurses not expected to manage respiratory equipment
- No patient care technicians (PCTs); a resource RN is utilized in addition to charge RN
- House supervisor available 24/7; charge nurse out of count; manager available Monday-Friday
- Floating primarily to other med/surg and telemetry units; travelers are first to float
- ICU nurse ratio is 1:3 when floated
Additional Notes
- Must pass a pass/fail exam on day 1 of orientation
- Strict adherence to sterile technique expected
- Travelers must be competent in required nursing skills to be a good fit
- This is a travel assignment with specific submission and screening requirements (e.g., driving license radius rule, pre-screening, and auto-offer conditions)
