Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit with 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Common patient diagnoses: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, various neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Telemetry monitors used (Phillips brand); nurses do not need to interpret strips
Shift Details
- 12-hour shifts
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (both Saturday and Sunday shifts)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: Rotation with general unit staff; travelers may float to general unit or other units only if competent and paired with trained nurse
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Prior travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Previous experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Experience with heparin titrated drips based on PTT required (RNs must titrate drips)
Patient Care Support
- Charge nurse present 24/7 (does not take patient assignments unless short staffed)
- House supervisor present 24/7
- Nurse aides/patient care techs available with ratios:
- Day & evening: 1:9-10
- Night: 1:10-12
Equipment & Procedures
- High flow oxygen used rarely (mainly stable COVID patients)
- RNs troubleshoot respiratory equipment but do not manage vents or CPAP/BiPAP
Orientation & Policies
- 2-day unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
- Drug-free workplace; negative drug screen required
- Dress code: No specific scrub color, tattoos must be covered, no piercings except ears
Licensure & Requirements
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Med Surg experience with at least 1 year, including experience within the last year
- One completed travel nursing assignment
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
- Experience with heparin titrated drips based on PTT (heparin gtt experience)
