Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Common patient diagnoses: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Telemetry monitors used (Phillips); nurses do not read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare)
Schedule & Work Details
- 12-hour shifts
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: Rotates with general unit staff; may float outside general unit only if competent and paired with trained nurse
- Charge nurse and house supervisor present 24/7; charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments unless short-staffed
- Nurse aides/patient care techs support the unit with ratios approximately 1:9-12 depending on shift
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience with level 1 trauma patients
- Prior travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Previous experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Ability to titrate drips, including heparin drip based on PTT (heparin drip experience required)
Orientation & Policies
- 2-day unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
- Drug-free workplace; negative drug screen required
- Dress code: No specific scrub color, tattoos must be covered, no piercings except ears
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Orientation hours (12 hours) are non-billable and guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation
- Call-off policy allows 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has been initiated
- BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications
- Minimum experience: Level 1 trauma, dedicated neuro unit experience, prior travel nursing experience
- Ability to titrate drips including heparin
