Job Details

- Unit Beds: 63 (49 private, 9 observation beds)
- Shift Hours:
- Days: 07:00 - 19:30
- Nights: 19:30 - 07:30
- Scheduling: Block scheduling considered with approval; travelers do not self-schedule
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday Requirement: Rotate every other holiday
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating: Travelers float first, only to units matching their experience level; ICU RNs floating to general units take a team of 3 patients
Patient Care & Unit Information
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 4-5 patients per RN
- Nights: 5-6 patients per RN
- Patient Types: Post-op surgical, trauma, overflow medical patients
- Common Care Tasks: Dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, TPN
- Drip Management: RNs do not titrate drips except Heparin (set rate only)
- Charge Nurse: Yes, 2 charge RNs per shift; they do not take patient assignments
- House Supervisor: Available 24/7
- Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs:
- Day: 7-10 patients per PCT
- Night: 10-15 patients per PCT
- Duties include vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, and ambulation
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment:
- No ventilators on unit
- CPAP and high flow oxygen used; RT manages nebulizers, RNs manage inhalers and CPAP placement
- Telemetry: Some patients on telemetry with central monitoring techs; bedside RNs do not interpret strips
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation includes 2 shifts with a preceptor plus one 12-hour shift for EPIC and professional orientation with the unit educator
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated
- BLS (AHA) certification required
- Must produce a negative drug screen for all panels (drug-free campus policy)
Experience & Skills
- Experience in post-op patient care required
- Strong critical thinking skills and good bedside manner
- Team player who asks for help when needed
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Scrub color/dress code: Any color allowed
