Neuro Med-Surg Acute RN Position
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Department: Neuro Med-Surg Acute
- Unit Size: 54 beds (2 semi-private)
- Common Diagnoses: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
Required Certifications & Experience
- Certifications: BLS (AHA), NIHSS
- Experience:
- Must have Level 1 trauma experience
- Previous travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate drips, including heparin drip based on PTT (must have heparin drip experience)
- Telemetry monitors (Phillips) are used house-wide; nurses do not need to read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare) — RNs troubleshoot only
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse: Present 24/7, generally does not take patient assignments unless short-staffed
- House Supervisor: Present 24/7
- Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs:
- Day & Evening shifts: 1 aide per 9-10 patients
- Night shift: 1 aide per 10-12 patients
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
- Shift Times: Example night shift 1900-0700
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating: Float in rotation with staff; travelers float to general unit floor; if floated outside general unit, only assigned tasks within competency and with trained nurse support
Orientation & Policies
- Orientation: 2 days (unit-specific and computer training) with educator and preceptor
- Dress Code: No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
- Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required
- Local Placement: Accepts clinicians living within 50 miles radius
This position is ideal for experienced neuro med-surg RNs with trauma and travel nursing background seeking a 13-week contract in a supportive acute care environment.
