Travel/Contract Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Neuro

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

• Work option: 36 or 48-hour shifts
• Specialty: Mixed Acuity (Medical Surgical/Telemetry & Stepdown)
• Unit: 48-bed unit specializing in Neurology and Neurosurgery
• Patient population includes strokes, aneurysms, seizures, spinal fusions, brain and spinal cord tumors, and other neurological conditions
• Care for up to five Med Surg patients per nurse
• Ratios:

  • Med Surg/Telemetry: 1:5 days / 1:6 nights (rarely 1:7 nights)
  • Stepdown: 1:3-4 days and nights
• RNs must be prepared to float frequently within scope, including to multiple units and potentially to Bellevue campus
• Facility is 100% nicotine-free
• Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat)
• Holiday requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse license for Nebraska (pending license accepted but must be in hand before start)
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital (highest required experience)
• EPIC charting experience required
• Drip medication experience required on all floors
• First-time travelers NOT accepted unless they have 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center
• Must be willing and able to float to various units as needed
• Locals NOT accepted (must live more than 100 miles from facility)
• Mandatory scrubs: Steele gray with facility logo (provided after confirmation)

Certifications & Training

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - as applicable
• BLS (Basic Life Support) - as applicable
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - as applicable
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure) - as applicable
• NIH Stroke Certification - as applicable
• Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam - as applicable
• Annual Skills Checklist required

Background & Compliance Requirements

• Government-issued photo ID required
• Background check within 30 days of start, including nationwide and federal enhanced searches
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and OIG checks required every 30 days
• Education verification required
• State-specific registry checks (Nebraska DHHS Adult & Child Services Registry)
• Primary source license verification and NURSYS verification required
• Drug screen within 60 days of start and updated annually
• References: 2 work references from past 2 years (or 1 if not a current traveler)

Health & Immunization Requirements

• Physical exam within 1 year, updated annually
• Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually (3M 1860 Small/Regular or 3M 1870+)
• Tdap/Tetanus vaccine within last 10 years
• Annual PPD or equivalent TB testing, chest x-ray if history positive
• MMR (2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters if low/equivocal titers)
• Hepatitis B titer required (declination accepted if non-reactive)
• Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters if low/equivocal titers)
• Flu vaccine preferred but not mandatory; documentation or declination required
• COVID vaccine preferred; medical/religious exemption or declination accepted
• Eye exam required only for OR staff (not applicable here)

Additional Information

• Up to two weeks of RTO (request time off) permitted; must be submitted with application
• Parking available with permit or daily rates
• Facility is a teaching hospital with a focus on complex neurological cases
• Travelers are first to float to meet staffing needs

This position is ideal for experienced travel RNs with neuro or med-surg telemetry background who are comfortable with floating and working in a high-acuity, academic medical center environment.
