Job Opportunity: PCU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Role: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse
  • Ratios: 1:5 patient-to-nurse ratio
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
  • Floating: Regular floating within scope to various departments/units including Emergency Department inpatient holding
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: No more than 7 days
  • Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks

Experience & Skills Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse
  • Required Years of Experience: 2 years
  • Prior Charge and Teaching Hospital experience preferred
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required

Clinical Skills & Work Settings

  • Experience in MS/Telemetry, Telemetry, Cardiac Telemetry, ER Holding, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown
  • Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response: Dysrhythmia interpretation and management, telemetry monitoring (unit and remote), rapid response team use
  • Cardiovascular Care: Post cardiac events, angiogram, MI, pre/post cardiac cath and surgery
  • Endocrine/Metabolic: IV insulin protocols
  • Gastrointestinal: Feeding tube care and management
  • Renal: Pre/post hemodialysis management, renal failure care
  • IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Blood product administration, central line care, phlebotomy, peripheral line care, PICC line management, IV starts
  • Medication Management: Heparin protocols, cardiac drips (no titration), PCA, procedural sedation administration, titration of cardiac drips
  • Neurological/Psychiatric: CVA care
  • Orthopedics: Peripheral nerve block catheters, total joint replacements
  • Plastics: Surgical drains
  • Respiratory: Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula, nasal cannula, oxygen masks, non-invasive airway management, tracheostomy management
  • Professional Skills: Isolation precautions, wound care, wound vac

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID (Driver’s License/State ID)
  • Criminal Background Check (within 6 months) including statewide, nationwide, sex offender, and international searches if applicable
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG quarterly checks
  • Education Verification (highest nursing education)
  • State License Verification (Primary source verification required, Missouri licenses via NURSYS)
  • Competency Exams: Medication/Pharmacology, Dysrhythmia/EKG, Unit-specific competency exams (updated annually)
  • Color Blind Testing (within 12 months of start)
  • Skills Checklist (unit-specific, within 1 year of start)
  • Employment Application
  • References: Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
  • Physical Exam (within 1 year)
  • Fit Mask (annual renewal required)
  • Immunizations and Health Documents:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (valid within 10 years)

  • Orientation Modules (approx. 16 hours, required for all RNs and LVNs)
  • Healthstream Modules (specific to facility, completed prior to start)

  • Floating may include multiple units and emergency department inpatient holding
  • No pending licenses accepted
  • Must meet all compliance and documentation requirements prior to start
  • Candidates must be prepared for holiday shifts and charge RN assignments as needed

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with at least 2 years of experience in progressive care or telemetry settings, who is comfortable with a variety of clinical skills and floating between units, and who holds current ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications.
