Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Battle Creek, Michigan
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Overview

• ICU position with a mix of PCU and general medical/transfer patients.
• Patient ratios vary by acuity:

  • ICU and PCU mix: 3:1
  • PCU and general med/transfer: up to 4:1
  • Ventilated patients: 2:1
  • High acuity (Cooling/CRRT): 1:1
• Floating required to other ICU and Med Surg units as census fluctuates.
• Work schedule includes every other weekend.
• Must be available for the entire week of orientation.
• Holiday time off restrictions apply (only one holiday request allowed, either the day or the eve/day after, not both).

Required Experience & Licensure

• Specialty: Registered Nurse - ICU
• Years of Experience: Minimum 1 year ICU experience (1st time travelers accepted)
• Michigan RN License required (must have license in hand)
• BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), NIH certifications required

Patient Diagnoses

• COPD
• Encephalopathy
• Drug Overdose
• DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis)
• AKI (Acute Kidney Injury)
• Respiratory Failure
• Cardiac Arrest
• Heart Failure
• Atrial Fibrillation

Skills & Procedures

• Cardiac monitoring and emergency response including dysrhythmia interpretation and multi-system organ failure management
• IV insulin protocols
• GI surgery care
• Management of chronic/acute renal failure, CVVHD/CRRT
• Arterial line, central line, PICC line management and placement
• Blood product administration
• Continuous IV sedation, emergency medications, procedural sedation, titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
• Stroke management (CVA/acute stroke)
• Respiratory care including BiPAP, CPAP, ventilator management, high flow nasal cannula, ABG interpretation, suctioning (ETT, NT)
• Special procedures: CRRT, hemodialysis, arterial line placement, central venous catheter placement, tracheostomy placement, chest tube placement

Patient Ratios

• ICU/PCU: 1:1 to 4:1 depending on acuity
• Vent patients: 2:1
• High acuity patients (Cooling/CRRT): 1:1
• Med-Surg float: approx. 5-6 patients per nurse

Certifications Required

• BLS (AHA)
• ACLS (AHA)
• NIH Stroke Certification (annual update required)
• Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search back to age 18
• Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
• Michigan LARA fingerprinting within 45 days of start (for certain positions)
• Education verification (copy of highest degree or diploma)
• Physical exam within 1 year of start
• Drug testing: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 45 days of start
• Immunizations:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (must include pertussis)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 45 days of start
  • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
  • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
  • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
• Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required for candidates starting after November 1
• References: One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required
• Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps

Additional Notes

• Must be able to float to Med-Surg units as needed
• Patient acuity and nurse-to-patient ratios may vary daily
• Orientation week attendance mandatory
• Holiday time off is limited and strictly regulated

This position is ideal for ICU RNs with at least 1 year of experience who are comfortable managing a variety of critical care patients and procedures, and who are flexible with floating and scheduling.
