Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Job Requirements & Details

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 2 years nursing experience required
    • Trauma Level I experience required
    • First-time travelers accepted
    • Locals (Indiana residents) not accepted except for certain perioperative/OR specialties
  • Weekend & Floating Requirements:

    • Must be flexible with weekend shifts; expected to work 50% of weekends during contract
    • Refusal to float may result in contract termination
    • Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be required with resources provided
  • Unit Information:

    • Progressive care unit focusing on cardiovascular diagnoses such as congestive heart failure, post-myocardial infarction, pulmonary hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, COPD, congenital heart defects, infective endocarditis, and other co-morbidities
    • Care for patients post-cath lab procedures, pre-LVAD placements, heart/lung transplants, and pre-valve replacement
    • Staffing ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients
  • Skillset Requirements:

    • Cardiac PCU
    • Drips
    • Post Cath Lab care
    • IV starts
    • Sheath pulls
    • Preferred: Conscious sedation and telemetry
  • Charge Nurse & Precepting:

    • Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided
    • Must agree to possibility of precepting or having students shadow during assignment (teaching facility)
  • Certification Requirements:

    • BLS required
    • ACLS preferred
  • Call-In Policy:

    • Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status
  • Indiana RN Work Restriction (Effective 11/30/24):

    • Indiana RNs generally not allowed to work at these facilities after this date
    • Exceptions for Periop/OR RNs, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS)

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Licenses & Certifications:

    • Valid RN license with online verification within 30 days of start
    • BLS (AHA or RQI acceptable)
    • ACLS (preferred)
    • Other certifications as applicable (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, CHEMO) depending on unit requirements
  • Background Checks:

    • Must include 7 years of residence/work history
    • SSN trace, county criminal, statewide, national sex offender, FACIS Level III
    • Education verification required
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Health & Immunization Requirements:

    • Physical exam within 12 months of start
    • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
    • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
    • TB test (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) within 1 year
    • Immunizations or positive titers required for:
      • Rubeola (Measles)
      • Mumps
      • Rubella
      • Varicella (no declinations accepted)
      • Hepatitis B (series, titer, or signed declination)
      • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for flu season (9/30 - 3/31)
  • Competency Exams:

    • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required
    • Unit competency exam required
    • Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent) required
  • References & Employment History:

    • Minimum 2 references from recent employment within 2 years
    • Employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps of 30+ days
    • Skills checklist within 12 months and annually

Orientation & Facility Specific Requirements

  • Completion of facility-specific forms and packets prior to start (e.g., Look of Assurance, Compliance Checklist, Confidentiality Agreement)
  • Mandatory completion of orientation modules (22 required modules for RRT candidates) before orientation attendance
  • Self-study orientation and testing required for certain facilities
  • Proof of auto insurance required for Hospice specialty travelers
