Histology Technician - Travel/Contract

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (5 shifts per week, 8 hours each, 11:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 40

Job Description

Seeking a skilled Travel Histology Technician with expertise in:

• Paraffin embedding and cutting biopsies
• Microtomy and sectioning for routine H&E staining
• Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and molecular procedures
• Processing information and office orders
• Minimal special staining and processing duties

Typical duties focus on microtomy or embedding.

Required Qualifications

• ASCP-HT certification (American Society for Clinical Pathology - Histotechnologist)
• Minimum 1 year of recent hands-on histology technologist experience

Work Environment & Attire

• Lab environment is large, bright, clean, and cold (wear scrubs of any color; sweatshirts or jackets recommended)
• Earbuds allowed one at a time with minimal phone usage
• Locker and lock provided for personal items
• Break room with kitchen facilities and disposable utensils available
• Parking is paid by employee except free on 3rd shift

Equipment & Technology

• 20 microtomy stations with Leica microtomes, water bath, cold plate, computer, and ESPO printer
• Embedding stations (Sakura and Leica)
• Peloris processors
• Automated H&E stainers/coverslippers (Leica and Sakura)
• Special stainers (Dako Artisan)
• DreamPath block filing system
• IHC instruments managed by separate staff

Background & Compliance Requirements

• 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
• Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start
• Education accreditation verification required (NAACLS accreditation for pathology assistants)
• Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed)
• Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
• Immunizations and health documentation required:

  • Tdap vaccine (adult dose)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation)
  • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
• Fit mask testing required annually for patient-facing roles (not required for lab roles unless specified)

Additional Requirements

• 2 professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership
• Employment application and skills checklist required
• Dress code and hand hygiene policy must be reviewed and signed prior to start
• Confidential Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
• Orientation safety manual acknowledgement required annually

Time Off & Overtime

• Pre-approved time off must be submitted before contract confirmation
• Some overtime offered but not mandatory
