Registered Nurse – Stepdown Cardiac

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)

Job Description

  • Provide nursing care on a pediatric cardiac stepdown unit.
  • Patient diagnoses include cardiac defects (medical and surgical).
  • Care involves managing tracheostomies, ventilators, high flow nasal cannula, post-operative catheterizations, post-cardiothoracic ICU care, inotropes, and heart and lung transplant patients.
  • Schedule includes working every other weekend.

Required Qualifications

  • License: Current Ohio RN license in hand.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of pediatric cardiac stepdown nursing experience.
  • References: Two professional references required at time of submission; one must be from a manager or supervisor (Charge RN acceptable). Peer references are not accepted.

Certifications

  • ACLS (American Heart Association only; Instructor, Provider, or RQI accepted)
  • BLS (American Heart Association only; Instructor, Provider, or RQI accepted)
  • PALS (American Heart Association only; Instructor, Provider, or RQI accepted)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – required for NICU RNs
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course)
  • National or state-required technical certifications as applicable
  • All certification names must exactly match legal name and RN license (no nicknames or typos).
  • Screenshots or photos of certifications are not accepted.

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • Current government-issued photo ID required within 24-48 hours of contract signing (no temporary IDs or paper licenses accepted).
  • Criminal background check within 30 days of start, including a 7-year county search and education verification through National Student Clearinghouse.
  • Fingerprinting (Ohio BCI/FBI) required within 60 days of start and must be updated for each new contract.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
  • Sex offender, state-specific searches (Nurse Aide Registry, Inmate Registry, Medicaid Exemption, Abuse Registry) required within 30 days of start.
  • Education verification required; diplomas not accepted, official transcripts may be required.
  • Drug screen (9-panel) negative result within 60 days prior to start.
  • Employment application and resume required.
  • Unit-specific skills checklist required and must be updated annually.
  • References must be professional and verifiable.

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (candidates sign Infection Control Policy in lieu of physical exam copy).
  • N95 fit testing required within 1 year of start and updated annually; acceptable masks specified.
  • TB testing options include 2 PPDs or IGRA within 12 months; additional requirements for positive results.
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine required within 10 years of start (vaccine must be after age 11).
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) immunity required via positive titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if titers are negative or equivocal.
  • Hepatitis B immunity or declination required.
  • Varicella immunity required via positive titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if titers are negative or equivocal.
  • Seasonal flu vaccine required October 31 – May 31; medical/religious exemptions accepted with facility approval and mask requirement during flu season.
  • TB questionnaire and fingerprint screening questions must be completed prior to start.
  • Candidates with approved flu vaccine exemption must wear a mask during flu season.
