Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical Neuro (Travel/Contract)
Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour day shifts (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM), 36 hours per week (3 shifts)
Job Overview
- Patient population primarily includes stroke patients, neurosurgery, epilepsy, traumatic and non-traumatic subdural hematomas, and other neurological diagnoses.
- Unit includes a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU); training for EMU is provided but typically not required for travelers unless trained.
- Daily census approximately 42 patients with 43 rooms/beds.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6.
- Floating required to other MedSurg/Telemetry areas, including possible COVID care units. Frequent floating may be necessary.
- Travelers must work every other weekend; if call-offs occur on weekends, make-up shifts are required.
- Preferred scheduling type; block scheduling not always guaranteed.
- Orientation: 36 hours.
- Scrubs color: Navy.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum of 2 years nursing experience, including at least 1 year of direct MedSurg experience within the last year
- At least 1 year of MedSurg experience
- Completion of 2 or more successful travel nursing assignments; first-time travelers will not be accepted
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Patient Care & Unit Details
- Care for stroke and neurological patients with complex neuro diagnoses.
- Use of unit systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR.
- Floating may include COVID care units.
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- 12-hour day shifts, 36 or 48 hours per week accepted.
- Floating required to other MedSurg/Telemetry units.
- Must work every other weekend; call-offs require make-up shifts within the same week or at contract end.
- No RTO (release time off) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to contract cancellation.
Orientation & Training
- 36-hour unit orientation required.
- Optional Epic test-out available for experienced Epic users (6+ months experience), allowing earlier start onsite.
- Must complete required facility-specific education modules and compliance training.
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physician-signed TB questionnaire required.
- Required immunizations or titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination).
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1–10/31).
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start.
- N95 fit mask required (can be completed onsite if needed).
- Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates.
- Physical exam not required for this crisis profile.
Documentation & Onboarding
- Required documents include: W4, State-specific W4, Permanent Tax Declaration, Photo ID (passport or driver’s license), Social Security card (if used for I9), Direct Deposit info, Emergency Contact, EOE forms, Arbitration Agreement, and others as applicable.
- Photo for badge must be submitted immediately after signing contract; passport-style photo on white background, facing forward, business attire, no head coverings except glasses.
- Must complete confidentiality agreement, medication safety training, and other facility-specific compliance forms.
- Must complete annual mandatory education and facility-specific orientation modules.
- Must register for facility corporate ID and complete I-Learn login within 24 hours of password setup.
Additional Notes
- This unit cares primarily for neurological patients with complex needs; MedSurg neuro experience is mandatory.
- Floating and weekend work are integral parts of the assignment.
- Strict attendance and call-off policies apply; failure to comply may result in contract cancellation.
- Navy scrubs required onsite.
This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg RNs with neuro expertise and prior travel nursing contracts who are comfortable with telemetry, dysrhythmia management, and flexible scheduling including floating and weekend shifts.
