Operating Room Technician

Location: Johnson City, New York
Employment Type: Clinical-Allied
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day (typically 6 AM - 7 AM start)
Hours: 40 hours per week (5 days of 8-hour shifts or 4 days of 10-hour shifts)
Call Requirements:

• Up to 3 call shifts per week (8 to 16 hours each)
• One working weekend every 4 weeks with a call shift

Job Summary

Under general direction, the Operating Room Technician observes and practices sterile technique, maintains asepsis, anticipates and assists the surgeon as needed, and actively participates in patient care and safety. Utilizes OR supplies conservatively and functions as a team member of the OR staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Follow infection control policies and demonstrate expertise in surgical scrub technique.
• Adhere to sterile technique principles preoperatively and intraoperatively.
• Assist the surgeon with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing instruments and related items during procedures.
• Anticipate surgeon’s needs for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
• Maintain an organized operative field, keeping instruments clean and properly placed.
• Keep accurate counts of sponges, tapes, needles, dissectors, and instruments.
• Prepare for cases by assembling supplies and equipment per preference cards; identify conflicts or problems.
• Care for instruments and supplies appropriately after each case.
• Provide a safe surgical environment by identifying potential hazards and assisting in preoperative equipment checks.
• Display knowledge of potential hazards in the OR (equipment, chemicals, gases).
• Utilize experienced OR staff as a resource and assist new OR personnel.
• Assist in suturing, retracting, and suctioning under surgeon’s direction.
• Handle and identify specimens according to policy.
• Expedite efficient OR turnover between cases.
• Participate in rotating call duty.
• Perform additional responsibilities as requested.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential from NBSTSA.
• Minimum of 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience, including experience within the last year.
• Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) Technologist experience.
• Experience with cardiothoracic procedures including CABG, valve replacements, VATS, and robotic chest procedures.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Additional Information

• Day rotation Monday through Friday.
• Call shifts and weekend work required as noted.
