Registered Nurse (RN) - Stepdown Unit (Contract)
Location: New York, NY
Shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
Hours per week: 34.5 hours (11 hours per day)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to a designated group of patients on a stepdown unit, applying nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Deliver nursing care based on professional practice models and nursing process.
- Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
- Integrate assessment and intervention skills in care delivery.
- Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
- Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.
Patient Experience
- Facilitate patient-centered care activities such as bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, medication review, and discharge wrap-up.
- Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Initiate service recovery for patient or family concerns as needed.
- Demonstrate empathy, respect, and active listening in all interactions.
Quality and Safety
- Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and escalate safety concerns appropriately.
- Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
- Implement high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
- Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance improvement.
Operations
- Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
- Coordinate supply and inventory management for patient care.
- Escalate material or staffing shortages to appropriate leadership.
- Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
- Maintain compliance with documentation and regulatory standards.
Professional Development
- Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Advance clinical competence from novice to expert level.
- Demonstrate professional communication and ethical decision-making.
- Engage in lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.
- Participate in shared decision-making through specialty councils and committees.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including within the last year
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Ventilator experience
- Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) experience
- Cardiology experience
- Telemetry experience
- Vascular Access experience
