Job Description
The RN First Assist (RNFA) works under the supervision of the attending physician to assist in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions during cardiac surgeries. The role primarily involves second assisting in cardiac surgical cases. The RNFA also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to support the surgical patient throughout the perioperative period. This position includes coverage of regional call to support the cardiac surgery program.
Required Qualifications
- License: Valid permanent RN license (Temporary licenses not accepted). Primary source verification required within 30 days of start and updated upon expiration.
- Certifications:
- Certified First Assistant (CFA)
- CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room)
- ACLS (American Heart Association only)
- Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience as an RN First Assist (based on specialty requirement).
- Health Requirements:
- Proof of influenza vaccination during flu season (October–March) or compliance with masking and declination forms.
- 2-Step TB test (PPD or IGRA) within the last 6 months; if positive, clear chest x-ray and current TB questionnaire required.
- Drug screen within 60 days of start (10-panel, no instant screens).
- Background Checks:
- Criminal background check within 6 months of start, including social security trace, county searches, national sex offender registry.
- OIG exclusion check within 6 months prior to start.
- SAM/EPLS/GSA/OFAC screening within 6 months prior to start.
- Other Documentation:
- Driver’s license or state ID (non-expired photo ID).
- Resume with education and work history, 2 professional references within last 2 years, and completed job application.
- Badge photo (headshot, shoulders up, plain background).
- Completion of required safety and compliance training modules prior to clearance (annual renewal).
