Job Description
- Unit: Post Cardiac Surgery, Post Vascular Surgery
- Patient Care: Strong cardiac and post-op heart experience required.
- Staffing Ratios: 1:3-5 based on acuity.
- Floating: May be required to float to different levels of care including Med-Surg, PCU, ICU at University and Methodist Hospitals. Refusal to float may result in contract termination.
- Charge Nurse: May be required to cover charge nurse responsibilities with training and resources provided.
- Weekend Work: Expected to work every other weekend; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs.
- Call-Ins: Must make up call-in shifts during the pay period or at the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- First Time Travelers: Accepted.
- Locals: Not accepted.
- COVID-19 Vaccine: Required for all travelers; medical or religious exemptions accepted with documentation.
- Indiana RN Restriction: Effective 11/30/2024, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at these facilities except for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (as applicable)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure) - AHA only (as applicable)
- CHEMO (Chemotherapy) - as applicable
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - as applicable
- NIH Stroke Certification - as applicable
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) - as applicable
- State Nursing License verification (within 30 days before start)
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement including HIPAA
Required Skills and Experience
- Level 1 or Level II Trauma Experience
- Telemetry monitoring
- IV Start
- Cardiac drips titration
- Strong cardiac/post-op heart experience is essential
Experience Requirements
- Specialty years of experience: Not explicitly stated; implied strong cardiac/post-op experience required (recommend minimum 2 years in specialty).

Health and Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam completed within 12 months of start.
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start (specific respirators approved).
- Immunizations and titers required:
- COVID-19 vaccine (mandatory)
- Rubeola (Measles) - positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no exemptions accepted.
- Mumps - positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no exemptions accepted.
- Rubella - positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no exemptions accepted.
- Varicella - positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no exemptions accepted.
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap - preferred but not required.
- Flu seasonal vaccination/documentation required for 2025-26 season; no declinations accepted.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
- Tuberculosis screening (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year.
- TB Questionnaire updated annually.
- Color Blind Exam (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score.
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required.
- Unit competency exam required.
Background and History Requirements
- Background check within 90 days of start including 7 years of residence/work history, SSN trace, county/state/national checks, sex offender registry, FACIS Level III.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start.
- Education verification and transcript/diploma required.
- Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment verified within 2 years.
- Current employment application with explanation of any gaps over 30 days.
- Skills checklist completed within 12 months and annually.
Additional Notes
- Travelers must complete mandatory IU Health modules prior to orientation (22 modules covering safety, compliance, infection prevention, HIPAA, etc.).
- Various facility-specific documents and compliance checklists must be completed prior to start.
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport required.
- Refusal to comply with floating or other operational requirements may result in contract termination.
This position is ideal for RNs with strong cardiac and post-op surgical experience who are comfortable with floating and working in a fast-paced, acuity-based environment. First-time travelers are welcome, but local candidates are not accepted. Compliance with strict immunization and background requirements is mandatory.
