Registered Nurse (Operating Room) - Travel/Contract
Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 4x10 hour shifts (06:45 - 17:15), every other weekend required
- Special Procedures: Trauma Surgery, Vascular, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics (trauma only, no joints), Urology, Endoscopy, General Surgery, Bariatrics, Plastics, OMFS, Dental, Renal Transplant, ENT, Head and Neck, Oncology
- Special Equipment: DaVinci Robot, Neptunes, Microscopes, Standard OR equipment, other specialty OR equipment
- Years of Experience Required: Minimum 2 years RN experience, with at least 1 year in Operating Room specialty (OR)
- Prior Travel Experience: Preferred (not required)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required
- Call Requirements: Yes, self-scheduled with some weeknights and weekends on a rotating schedule
- Floating: No floating outside scope of practice
- Block Scheduling: Cannot guarantee block scheduling
- Locals Accepted: No (must live outside 75-mile radius)
- Pending License: Accepted for submission, but active license required to start
- Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week
- Special Requirements: Experience in pediatric setting and women's specialty preferred; robotic surgery experience highly desired
- Scrub Color: Royal blue/white surgical scrubs provided
- Charting System: Cerner
- Parking: Free parking garage for travelers
Certifications Required
- BLS (AHA only, no pending or onsite completion allowed)
- ACLS (AHA only, as applicable)
- Other certifications as applicable per unit/job description (e.g., PALS not required for OR)
- Pass/Fail Testing (EKG, Medication Calculation, Blood Administration) required for nursing candidates
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification required for certain units (ER, Surgical & Trauma ICU, Trauma Stepdown, Behavioral Health)
- State RN License with Primary Source Verification within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification within 30 days of start

Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate healthcare provider, confirming good health and no limitations
- Annual fit mask testing (N95 3M models accepted) with onsite fit testing available if needed
- Required vaccinations and immunizations:
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless medically or religiously exempt with approved documentation
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions accepted with approval)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccinations or positive titers required
- Hepatitis B vaccination or documented immunity required
- Varicella vaccination or positive titers required
- Drug screening within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, opiates, PCP, benzodiazepines, methadone, propoxyphene)
- COVID-19 vaccination not required; proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted
Background & Documentation
- 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start (including SSN trace, county, sex offender, national, and international searches if applicable)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start, updated annually (completed independently)
- National sex offender registry check within 30 days of start, updated annually (completed independently)
- Valid Driver’s License required
- Social Security Card required (legible)
- Residency Declaration Form required if working on a compact license (driver’s license must match compact state license)
- References: Minimum 1 reference from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within 1 year of start (charge nurse reference must confirm direct supervision)
- Annual skills checklist for specialty required
Orientation & Facility Specifics
- Orientation is 2 days (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management training
- Required review of facility policies including blood administration, dress code, math calculation for medication administration, and EKG review (as applicable)
- Inservice training modules must be completed prior to start (approx. 4 hours), including pass/fail testing modules for certain specialties
- Time and attendance, medical release, vaccination exemption, application request, delegate, liability, and time gap forms required as part of credentialing
- Flu vaccination documentation or approved exemption required before start during flu season
- Facility is a Level 1 Trauma Center, major teaching hospital with 855 staffed beds
Additional Notes
- No first-time travelers accepted for this position
- Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked at this facility
- Flu vaccine refusal without medical proof is not accepted during flu season
- Candidate must submit a comprehensive PDF including work history, specialty skills checklist, references, license/certification verification, driver’s license, and social security card
This position is ideal for experienced OR Registered Nurses with trauma and specialty surgery experience who are comfortable with rotating call schedules and weekend shifts, and who meet the facility’s rigorous credentialing and health requirements.
