Job Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse - Pediatric StepDown Unit
  • Patient Ratios: Average 1:4
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: Yes, within scope to meet facility needs
  • Block Scheduling: Accommodated
  • Locals Accepted: No
  • Pending License: Accepted if active prior to start date
  • Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval

Experience Requirements

  • Years of Specialty Experience Required: 2 years
  • Prior Travel Experience: Strongly preferred (first-timers accepted but travel experience is preferred)

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or ARC only
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or ARC only
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - Not required for Pediatric StepDown
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit; always verify unit-specific requirements.

Background Checks & Verifications

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months prior to start; must be updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Education verification required; foreign equivalency reports required for internationally educated RNs
  • State license primary source verification required within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start

Competency Exams & Testing

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required within 12 months prior to start (85% passing score)
  • Color Blind Testing required for all candidates on/after 8/2/2024 (80% passing score)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for certain units (not required for Pediatric StepDown)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start; must be updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation required
  • Tdap vaccination highly preferred for pediatric specialties (declination accepted)
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • 10 Panel Drug Screen within 12 months of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID vaccination series preferred

Facility-Specific Training & Documents

Candidates must complete and attest to the following training modules (attestations can be completed electronically):

  • Stroke Education (not required for Pediatric specialties)
  • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training
  • Language Services Training
  • CAUTI Education Training (not required for PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Modules (not required for some hospitals)
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
  • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (not required for Pediatric specialties)
  • AME Blood Administration Module (not required for Behavioral Health, Case Managers, Home Health)
  • New Employee Orientation Module
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
  • ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
  • eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
  • Chaperone Policy Training (required for RNs and Allied Health)

Additional Requirements

  • Must provide a 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Skills checklist required within 12 months prior to start
  • Work history verification required for all start dates on/after 8/2/2024
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech and specialty roles (not applicable for RN Peds StepDown)

  • Floating within scope is expected to meet facility needs.
  • Locals are not accepted for this travel position.
  • Strong preference for candidates with prior travel experience.
  • Block scheduling is accommodated.
  • Weekend shifts required every other weekend.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity pediatric stepdown unit within a large, Level I trauma center using Epic charting. The role requires a minimum of 2 years of RN experience and strong clinical competencies, with a focus on pediatric care.
