Unit Description
- ICU Medical Unit: 12-bed critical care unit
- Patient Population: Adolescents, Adults, Geriatrics
- Common Conditions: Respiratory failure, acute/suspected MI, CHF, arrhythmias, pulmonary embolism, COPD, GI bleeding, sepsis, hypotension, overdose, hypertensive crisis, stroke, transient ischemic attacks, seizures
- Procedures & Monitoring: Intubation/mechanical ventilation, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz pulmonary artery lines (hemodynamic monitoring), new tracheostomies, thrombolytic administration, IV antiarrhythmic and vasopressor therapy, bedside/apnea monitoring, temporary pacers (external and transvenous), TEE, cardioversion, negative pressure isolation (AFB), dialysis
- Neurological Care: Frequent neuro checks (every 1-2 hours) for stroke and neurologically injured patients
- Majority of stroke patients admitted to this unit

- Days: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
Requirements
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in specialty required
- Unit will consider first-time travelers based on experience
Certifications & Licenses
- ACLS (AHA or ARC, RQI acceptable)
- BLS (AHA or ARC, RQI acceptable)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- South Carolina RN License (Primary source verification required)
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (see below)
Skills & Systems
- 1 year of EPIC experience required
- Medication system: Omnicell
- Must be competent in ICU critical care skills and procedures listed above
Floating Policy
- Floating to other Prisma Health units/campuses required as per census needs
- Floating only to units where qualified and competencies demonstrated/documented
Prior Travel Experience
- Not explicitly required; first-time travelers will be reviewed
Required Documentation & Compliance
Background Checks
- 7-year background check within 12 months of start
- EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and every 30 days thereafter
- Fingerprinting required if applicable (e.g., if lived/worked in WV in last 7 years)
- Education verification (highest level required)
- OFAC Sanctions List Search for new/pre candidates
Health Documents
- Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet physical demands
- Negative TB test (True 2-step PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or Tspot) within 90 days of start
- Immunizations or titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine if working in high-risk areas
- Drug screening within 1 year, updated annually (5 panel minimum)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required (not for remote workers)
Competencies & Testing
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (annual)
- Core Parts I, II, III training (annual)
- Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication) required for RNs (except prebook or non-clinical)
- Color Blind Testing if assigned to ED or Pediatric ER
- Other unit-specific competencies as applicable
Orientation & Training
- Online Cornerstone Modules (~12 hours) must be completed within 72 hours of assignment
- 16 hours non-billable orientation onsite
- Badge photo required prior to start (passport style, specific background and quality requirements)
Additional Certifications (as applicable)
- PALS, NRP, TNCC, ENPC, EFM, STABLE, CPI, MAB, NIH Stroke Certification, Lactation Certificate (for Women’s RN roles)
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement (HIPAA, OSHA/TJC training)
This position offers a challenging critical care environment with a diverse patient population requiring advanced nursing skills and certifications. Candidates should be prepared for floating responsibilities and must meet all compliance and documentation requirements prior to start.
