ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Los Angeles, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Requires minimum 2 years of ICU experience (including cardiovascular, open heart, and balloon pump experience)
  • Accepts first-time travel nurses
  • EPIC electronic health record system experience is required
  • Patient population: Adults to Geriatrics
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2
  • Average unit census: 24 patients, 28 beds/rooms
  • Every other weekend coverage required
  • No on-call requirement
  • Self-scheduling available
  • Scrubs color: Royal Blue

Required Clinical Skills

  • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • IV insulin protocols
  • Arterial line management
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line and PICC line care/management
  • Starting IVs
  • Care of ventilated patients
  • Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
  • Suctioning

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • VIP, MAB, or CPI certification with in-person physical component (required onsite or within 90 days of start)
  • Fire Card specific to Los Angeles (must be obtained within 2 weeks of start if not prior)

Required Exams and Competencies

  • Pass/fail dysrhythmia/EKG competency exams:
    • Relias Advanced Dysrhythmia exam within 72 hours of signing (minimum 80% score, 2 attempts allowed)
    • Proctored dysrhythmia exam onsite during orientation (minimum 80%, no lethal rhythms missed)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam (passing score 80%)
  • Other competency exams as applicable to ICU specialty

Licensure

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for California
  • License verification required within 14 days prior to start

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year prior to start, confirming fitness for duty and communicable disease clearance
  • Negative TB test (TSPOT, QGold, or 2 PPDs) within 1 year
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Required immunizations or positive titers (or declination forms) for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or facility-specific declination (mask required if unvaccinated during flu season)
  • COVID vaccination or facility-specific declination (mask required if unvaccinated during flu season)
  • Negative 7-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (instant acceptable, marijuana excluded)
  • Fit mask test within 1 year (with religious exemption process if applicable)

Documentation and Onboarding Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
  • Emergency contact form prior to start
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history and federal exclusions (updated monthly)
  • Education verification (highest level)
  • Employment application/resume with at least 1 year relevant experience and 7 years work history if applicable
  • Two professional references from managers or charge nurses (validated within 2 years)
  • Skills checklist updated annually
  • Facility-specific documents including photo for badge (white background, shoulders up) submitted by Tuesday prior to start
  • Completion of required Oracle pre-start modules by 5 PM on first day of assignment
  • No requested time off (RTO) allowed during first 2 weeks of assignment; RTO must be submitted with submittal and cannot be changed except to cancel

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including cardiovascular, open heart, and balloon pump experience
  • ICU experience within the last year
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Fire Card specific to Los Angeles
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system

Additional Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted
  • Onsite pass/fail testing is strict; failure results in cancellation without remediation
  • VIP, MAB, or CPI certification must include an in-person physical component; online-only certifications are not sufficient unless followed by in-person within 90 days
  • Fire Card is a Los Angeles city requirement and must specify location and expiration date
  • Self-scheduling and no call requirements support work-life balance
